“What?”

“That it had nothing to do with me. Are you ever going to tell me the real reason you ended things?”

“I told you. I had some personal shit going on. Things I had to take care of on my own.”

“I see.”

I turn to face her. “Kai, that part of my life is complicated. It’s something I’m still trying to deal with. It’s not your burden to know or care what it is right now. Just, please, trust the fact that I’m working on sorting my shit out and earning your trust again.”

She gives me that look. The look she has when she’s determined to get to the bottom of things. But it quickly passes, and she smiles. “Okay. I can’t force you to talk about it. Besides, we’ve both moved on, right?”

No. No, we haven’t moved on at all. Ending things with Kai was the biggest mistake of my life. I never forgave myself for it. “When you think about someone every day, is that considered moving on?”

I expect a yes or no answer, but I don’t get one. Instead, she turns her head and stares out into the city. “Are you still working at that auto shop in Yonkers?”

“No. I own my own shop now.”

Her head whips around. “Jaxon, that’s…that’s amazing. You always wanted to own your own shop.”

“Yeah, I plan to open more, eventually. Maybe one in each borough.”

“That sounds fantastic. I’m proud of you.”

Her pride makes me smile. Kai was nothing but supportive of my dream. She even offered to loan me the money to help jumpstart my business. But my ego wouldn’t allow me to accept. I wanted to find my own way. I just wish she could have been around during the process. “Thank you.”

“So, how’s it going? Do you have a lot of customers?”

I do. And not only do I fix cars, but I also restore and rebuild them. The problem is that a lot of my income goes toward The Coma Center. “Yeah. I’m doing pretty well.”

She smiles widely. “I knew you could do it.”

I change the subject. “How about you? Tell me why you’re still at that uptight accounting firm instead of running your own restaurant.”

She laughs out loud. “Because it pays the bills.”

“Your food is outstanding. Your restaurant would beat out any other place in New York. You know this.”

She nods. “Maybe one day.”

I can’t take my eyes off her as she’s deep in thought. The sun is starting to set, but the rays are bright enough to glow upon her skin, highlighting a few freckles on her cheeks. Her red curls are frizzy from the humidity. She’s so fucking gorgeous, and I want her. Right here. Right now. But I don’t want her to think that sex is the only thing on my mind. I lift my finger and brush the side of her face, slowly. She closes her eyes and allows me to. “Take off work tomorrow.”

“Why?”

“There’s somewhere I want to take you.”

“In the middle of the day? On a Friday?”

“Not just the day. For the weekend.”

CHAPTER 4

JAXON

It took some convincing to get Kai to go away with me for the weekend. For one, we only just reconnected. And for two, she’s very dedicated to her job and hates taking time off last minute. Once she agreed, I had to get my own shit in order and make sure I had someone to be there in case an emergency happened with Summer. Adrian assured me he would be available. He even offered to call the center every day to check on her. I had to give them permission to speak with him, but that wasn’t an issue. I need to be focused for what I’m about to do. I’m going to tell Kai everything. And if I’m going to do this, I don’t need any distractions. We arrive at the hotel almost three hours later due to traffic. “Wow, I can’t believe I’ve never been here before.”

“Me either. Guess it’s a first for the both of us.”

“Can we go to the casinos?”
