I was getting tired of fighting and it was getting me nowhere.

I tried screaming one more time before he grabbed my jaw like before and heavily banged my head against the wall again. Slowly, I felt the sweet peace of darkness sneaking in through the corners of my eyes. It came in mercy, to steal my pain away, to ease the trauma of this memory.

Suddenly I was free, my wrists falling heavily to my sides as my knees gave out from under me. I couldn’t hold myself up, the pain in my skull stealing my vision and strength as I fell to the ground.

My vision was blurry, but my last memory before blacking out was an enraged Liam and his beautiful face painted in streaks of crimson.

After that?

Nothing. After that, I was finally free and plunging into darkness.

Chapter 34

Liam

It’s all my fault that we’re here now.

There was a weight being lifted from my shoulders each time I held Jamie in my arms.

Today was no different.

Her big brown eyes looked deep into mine, filled with sadness and torment as we danced. She looked absolutely breathtaking, but under her makeup and elegant dress, I saw her beaten features and protruding bones. Every time I saw the agony in her eyes, it killed off another piece of my soul, and I was already running low these days.

She looked at me in shock when I told her I loved her. I couldn’t help but claim her as mine in one last kiss. Show her it was true, make her feel the undying love I would forever have for her.

My Jamie.

She was the one.

The only one.

The one who could summon my angels and ease my demons.

It’s all my fault that we’re here now.

Matt escorted Francesca to the hotel where she was staying while I took Jamie to the hospital. Alison came with us, in tears during the whole drive, cradling Jamie’s head in her lap, trying her best to stop the bleeding on the back of her head.

The blood that painted my hands in red wasn’t hers, though. And in my opinion, I had very little of it littering my clothes for comfort. I craved more. I needed a whole lot more to feel that I had even remotely avenged her.

They had to practically peel me off of that sick son of a bitch. He was barely breathing once they finally managed to. I’ll need to revisit and finish the job later. Right now, I had other priorities. I had to take care of her, make sure she made it through this.

My heart was unmendably broken from what happened, from knowing what she went through. It physically hurt. The sharp pain penetrated my chest, spreading deep through my flesh, tearing me apart from the inside.

It’s all my fault that we’re here now.

I was sitting in the barren waiting room with Alison next to me, staring into the blue sterile floors of the hospital, not daring to blink. Time went by at an agonizingly slow pace as we both fell into despair waiting for the news. Any news.

Finally, a nurse came by saying that Jamie was taken to a room and was now resting. She led us there, her small legs taking forever to cover the length from the waiting room to the last door down the hall.

“Are you the husband?” The nurse asked before we entered her room.

“Yes, I am.” I proudly replied, Alison’s eyes widening at me for the shameful lie. I couldn’t care less. I was hers, and she was mine, that’s all that mattered at the end of the damn day. They’d never disclose any information if I said otherwise.

“The doctor will be here shortly to speak with you. We gave her a powerful sedative so she’ll be able to rest right through the night. She needs all the rest she can get.”

Finally, the nurse stepped out of our way, and my eyes welled up with tears as soon as they rested on Jamie.

She looked so pale in her deep slumber. So fragile. There were already bruises painting her beautiful skin in blue and black patches.
