“And that’s all? Convenience and nothing else?”

“They’re doing it to us, so might as well pay them back in the same fucking currency.” There was more to it than what he let on. I knew my brother too well, but right now, I’d take what he was selling.

There was light at the end of this tunnel, and I wasn’t feeling the slightest bit of guilt for using my brother to save me from a fate that didn’t belong to me.

The question that remained was, would Jamie still take me back?

“Don’t mention any of this before it’s settled. Not that I’m foreseeing any resistance, but it’s best to be safe. For now, you should keep the surveillance on Jamie and lay low as well. The Amatos know what you did today, and I’m sure they’re not pleased.”

“Sure thing, Boss.” I teased with a smile before hugging my brother and finally feeling hopeful again.

Jamie

I woke up feeling drowsy, struggling just to open my eyes. My head hurt, a dull and constant pain pulsing on the crown of my skull, while my limbs felt heavy, each muscle sore from the struggle.

There was a bright light above my head, shining intensely, making it hard to see anything past it. Slowly, I turned my head to the left, my eyes settling on Liam. He sat in a chair next to my bed, his head resting on the mattress. With one hand, he held mine, while his other one rested flat on top of my stomach, the warmth from his skin radiating straight to my core.

He’s here.

I took in the bare walls, painted in a faint blue, the machines that beeped in a steady rhythm, the smell of disinfectant and broken hope.

I was in the hospital.

My eyes closed again as my memory was swamped with the blurry images of the previous night. Tears formed under my eyelids, falling down my face without permission or mercy.

Did he rape me? Did he manage to finish what he wanted?

The uncertainty was killing me.

I tried to swallow the sorrow, but every time I tried, it balled back up, my throat stinging each time I insisted.

The vision of that repulsive hand squeezing the life out of me returned as if it was happening right now. I let out a muffled cry, covering my mouth with my free hand as vivid flashbacks haunted me on repeat.

Everything that happened suddenly came back. His dirty hands touching me, his fingers digging into my skin, his tongue running up my face.

Nausea hit me in heavy waves, the disgust of his touch still lingering on my dirty skin.

Liam suddenly woke up, and with a single look at me, he saw I wouldn’t be able to hold it. He grabbed the trash can by the door and held it in front of me just in time for me to empty my stomach into it.

My tears were unrelenting, the pain trying to leave my body through them, but it only seemed to make it worse. I hurled again and again until there was nothing left in me.

Liam cleaned me up, a soft washcloth dampening my skin in tender swipes. I saw the fear of hurting me in his eyes, his eyebrows joined in the center with worry and caution.

He hugged me to his chest, giving me a safe and warm place to cry while he cradled my head in his arms, soothing my pain with feather-light kisses. There was something about him that, whenever he held me, all my desolation was drained and replaced with serenity.

I let myself absorb the healing magic from his touch and the peace from his kisses before breaking free and facing my demons.

“Liam, please tell me. Did he?” My voice was a broken whisper, hoarse and pained.

“No, my love. He didn’t.” A new flow of tears rushed from my eyes, relief filling my lungs. “But something else happened, Jamie.”

I looked into his eyes, not uttering a word in expectance, waiting for him to carry on. There was this overwhelming sadness swimming around in those green pools that shattered my heart all over again. He paused, trying to control the tears from falling down his face, but ultimately losing the battle.

“You were pregnant, Jamie. You had a miscarriage. I’m sorry, Baby, I’m so fucking sorry.” His voice was laced in an agony that shot straight to my chest.

I was pregnant? How?

I tried to understand as I hugged Liam back, my heart sinking deep into my chest, burning a hole right through to the other side. The devastation in his voice was soul-wrecking.
