I heard her crying in the middle of the night. She did that every single night since we had come home. She somehow managed to stay strong during the day, only to crumble in the privacy that the shadows brought.

Every time I heard that sound, I wished I had killed that mother fucker.

There was no choice but to turn him in to the police since we needed the hospital to examine Jamie for forced intercourse.

I had trouble saying the fucking word. Rape.

We had to press charges and hand the fucker in. We had him under surveillance, knowing he would be free in less time than he deserved since he didn’t get to actually go through with it. Since it was his first charge, they’d go easy on him for sure. That was the fucking justice system we had in this damn country. Rotten to its roots.

They’d set his bail, and being a fucking millionaire, he won’t have any trouble accessing his funds to cover it. I was glad to at least postpone it a bit. He had been admitted to the hospital after the beating I gave him, and to me, it felt like it still wasn’t enough. I wasn’t about to let Jamie live in fear of what that scumbag might try to do to her.

In due time, I’d be paying that decaying fucker a nice little midnight visit.

Tonight, though? My mind had taken a small break from planning how I’d dispose of his body to make way for the anxiety that preceded The Commission’s meeting. Luckily Jimmy had called asking if he could come over to talk about the mission I had assigned him. Maybe that could help me take my mind off what was happening downtown right about now.

Matt had my balls in a twist for two whole weeks, but I tried my best to be as confident as possible whenever Jamie brought up the subject.

The only way the outcome of that meeting would affect my life was whether Jamie and I could stay in New York or if we had to get the fuck out of here. I wouldn’t be considering any other options. With Jamie by my side, I could be happy anywhere. Give me a cabin in the woods and the woman of my dreams, and I’d beat off any bear that tried to get to us.

I waited for Jimmy by the door, trying to hold up the calm mask I had plastered on my face for Jamie’s sake.

He was the one who carried out our investigations. His exceptional skills at digging up dirt were a game-changer. He was in charge of following the leads Frank had given us after a nice hard beating. This visit meant one of two things – either he had hit a dead-end, or he found out who Jamie’s father was.

I walked him straight to my home office, closing the door behind him, making sure we were far from Jamie’s hearing range. I wanted to know what he had for me first before getting her hopes up.

She didn’t need another fucking heartbreak right now, so I was the only one he was allowed to disclose information to. No messengers, no texts, no emails.

“Spit, Jimmy. What do you have for me?” I hastily asked as I sat down on my chair behind the desk, motioning for Jimmy to take the seat in front of me.

“Frank didn’t give us much to work on besides Jamie’s birth certificate. It isn’t signed by him or her real father. That means he was telling us the truth about not being her father. He said a woman would send him cash every month to keep him quiet and for him to cover the baby’s needs. He didn’t know who sent it, but whoever it was really didn’t want Jamie to be found. We checked the transfer details, and the trail leads to an offshore account. Un-fucking-traceable. We searched the house for anything that might have given us any clue. We didn’t find anything conclusive.” He explained.

Fuck. I couldn’t believe this was it. If someone could find something, it would be Jimmy.

“But we did find this at Jamie’s apartment when you sent us for her stuff.” He continued, fishing in his pocket for something.

My eyes widened in shock as I saw the engraved symbol on the signet ring he handed me.

“FA. Fuck!” I grunted. “You could have started off with this. Have you told anyone? Has anyone else seen this?” I sternly asked him.

“No, Boss. You’re the first.” My head fell back as I let the information sink in. This couldn’t be true. I’d recognize this symbol anywhere. I had seen several documents and letters with this seal on them.

Every cosca had one, including ours. The only difference was that ours read “FB,” Famiglia Battaglia.

“Do you have any clue which one of them is the owner?”

Jimmy nodded his head, and as I turned the ring in my fingers, I saw why. Engraved on the inside of the ring was the inscription – “Distintivo dell’Omerta.EEA.”

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

This fucking ring belonged to Enzo Emilio Amato.

Chapter 37

Liam

I paced around the office, Jimmy’s eyes following my every step. I was trying to process the bomb I held in my hands. Literally.
