“Good. I don’t need the man to be scared of me before I even arrive.” Liam chuckled at my remark, filling my ears and my heart with that delicious sound of happiness.

“I’m not sure that would be the case. But a deal is a deal, and I’m a Man of Honor, after all. Pun intended. Just call me when it’s over, okay?”

“Yes, Boss,” I teased, placing a kiss on his luscious lips and leaving for my life-changing meeting with my real father.

Soon after, Carl was dropping me off where we’d agreed, and I watched him drive off before crossing the road into Central Park. My heart was pounding erratically against my chest, the loud noises of the city muffled by the drumming of its rate in my ears.

That feeling was back. Tenfold.

A dooming sensation that something very bad was about to happen. I inhaled again, trying to shake it off, telling myself it was only my life making its way back into my brain and playing its dirty tricks on me. All those bad memories creeping back, flooding my brain and taking away all the joy of this moment.

The urge to run back home to the safety of Liam’s arms was almost crippling.

Come on, you can do this. Worst-case scenario, you’ll end up exactly as you are right now.

I smooth my clothes and push those thoughts aside, making a turn into the sea of green on my way to the Boathouse where the meeting was set to happen.

I wasn’t ten feet into the park before the harsh clasp of a hand wrapped around my arm, pulling me back into a hard object that was now digging its way under my rib cage.

“No fuss.” The man whisper-grunted into my ear, “You’ll be coming with me without making a scene if you don’t want this day to be your last.”

His harsh, menacing words traveled down my spine together with a shiver of fear, his iron grip around my arm forcing me to walk ahead of him back towards the sidewalk. A black SUV stopped just a few feet ahead of us, and I knew that was all the time I had to get myself out of this.

Words had been lost in the midst of fear, but I had to try.

“Please, Sir. Take whatever you want. I won’t even go to the police. Just please let me go.” I plead, my voice coming out shaky.

The rumble of laughter that came from behind me was forged in the depths of Hell, sounding like the devil himself. Mocking and threatening at the same time.

“I’m not robbing you. I’m kidnapping you.”

Tears were running down my face without me even noticing, smearing my make-up and fogging my eyes. Fear had frozen my senses, my body growing stiff, stumbling forward as the man shoved me with force.

This was it. This was the dreadful feeling I had in the pit of my stomach. My life was finally worth living, and now it would probably just… end.

I tried to override the panic that turned my breathing into a race, forcing myself to think of a way out, a way to warn Liam.

But my time was up. The distance to the car was covered, the brute behind me throwing me inside with a single shove. As soon as he was in the passenger seat, the car pulled from the curb, tires squealing from the force. My eyes were stuck on the window, trying to at least keep track of the way, yet there was a pull that made me feel observed. I feared to turn around and confirm that, indeed, I wasn’t alone in this back seat.

My heart sank further into my chest, my eyes tightly shut in a failed attempt to hold back the tears streaming rapidly and freely down my cheeks.

My fate had been drawn, and luck was no longer on my side.

I didn’t need to look. I knew he was here, and I couldn’t help but shiver in both fear and disgust.

Chapter 42

Liam

“Mike. Are you calling to tell me the Eagle has landed?” I joked, waiting to hear the chuckle at my stupid joke on the other side of the line. It never came.

“They’ve taken her.” His voice was eerily calm, caution dripping off every word. I could hear him trying to control his ragged breaths as he spoke.

“WHAT?” I shouted in disbelief. I stood there, frozen, the words echoing in my mind like a relentless drumbeat.

I had sent him and Jimmy to tail her. I respected her wish to go alone, but I cared more for her safety. The instruction was to keep a safe distance, allow her some privacy without it turning into reckless neglect. Bad fucking move.

“Some fucker grabbed her and shoved her into a black SUV.”
