I was propelled by my fury, each step heavier on the ground as I reached that dark place not that deep inside me. Ready for the kill. Ready for the sin. Ready to be submerged deeper into my own hell. Another body to litter my conscience, but this motherfucker just had it coming.

I wasn’t far behind them.

A loud shot rang through the barren space, bouncing off empty walls and rattling the windows high above. As I reached Don Amato, the guy controlling the forklift was lying at his feet, a busted kneecap bleeding profusely onto the ground.

“Where’s my daughter?” His voice was a low rumble of viciousness, an eerie calm that spoke volumes of its ruthlessness.

I looked around for the scumbag that had caused all this, but he was nowhere to be found. Yet a massive truck with a metal safe on the back caught my eye. Looking back at the idiota on the ground, his gaze was locked on the truck, too.

I didn’t need to ask again. Both the vehicle and the safe were too clean and shiny to have been sitting in this worn-out place for as long as the rusty hook in my hand had.

“She’s in there.” I urged, pulling Don Amato’s gaze away from the man on the ground. “Can you hot wire?”

“Before you could walk.” Don Amato replied, handing me his gun.

“Good. Take Jamie out of here. I’ll deal with the trash.” I said, pressing the toe of my shoe into his bullet wound. I had loose ends to tie, and fuck me if I was about to leave any thread dangling.

Grabbing my phone from my pocket, I called Mike.

“Boss?” He answered before it could even ring.

“Are the back doors chained as planned?”

“Yes. We have Mrs. Amato, too.”

“Good. There’s a truck here at the back, and I’m sure Jamie is trapped inside the safe. Don Amato is going to need help getting her out. He’ll come to you through the front. Don’t shoot.”

As soon as I hung up, the truck roared to life, Don Amato revving the engine to get my girl to safety.

I turned back to the fucker that was now at my feet, pressing my foot harder into his knee and smiling at the strained screams he muffled into the crook of his arm. As much as I’d like to squish the blood out of him and see him pass out, I had bigger fish to hook.

“Rest in… oh wait. Fuck that. May you rot in Hell.”

“Please, no…”

BANG.

He didn’t get to have any last words. Worms like him didn’t deserve the time of day.

I looked down the hall that led to what seemed to be a partially destroyed kitchen. There were white tiles on the walls and floor, once shiny but now covered in dirt that clung to them like grease. More of those gutters ran the length of the room, parallel to the same rods hanging overhead. This was probably the place where they gutted the pigs and left them to bleed out before moving on to the next step.

Appropriate. I thought again, looking at the hook in my hand.

Mercier had to be here somewhere. There was nowhere else to go now that the only door out was chained from the outside. Without a warning, another shot rang, and a sharp sting radiated from my leg upwards. It hurt like a motherfucker, but I was still paralyzed and sedated by the terror of almost losing Jamie when that fucking crate smashed into the ground.

“Pathetic. You can’t even shoot properly to save your own life.”

I’d taken note of the trajectory. He was right in front of me, behind a stainless steel counter that had definitely seen better days.

“There’s only one way to eat an elephant. One shot at a time and you’ll be at my feet.”

I laughed. Guttural and deep, manic as if my brain was glitching.

“You’re a treat, Mercier. But this is a pig slaughterhouse, so I’m thinking I’m gonna follow the house rules.” The man could be a rapist, even attempt kidnapping, but he was no match for a trained enforcer. Without him noticing, I’d tip-toed over to the counter, and before he could take another breath, I dove over it, sticking the hook in his flesh and pulling him along with me.

The man shouted in pain, and fuck was it a beautiful symphony. I rolled us over and unhooked the metal from his shoulder, ready to end this nightmare once and for all.

“You should know by now that the house always wins. As I said, house rules, Mercier. Guts. Out.”
