My cock quickly deflated as reason finally came back to my senses. Whoever sent her knew me fucking well, but not well enough to think I would fall for it.

I’m on to you, whoever you are.

I left her in that bathroom, along with half of my brain. I needed to get back to the office ASAP, but not without a fresh cup of coffee. I needed the punch of a straight-up black and sour cup before I had to deal with what was coming. Yet those thoughts that had been burning me inside the whole morning were nothing but a distant whisper. She had taken over, overriding everything else. Maybe I should have fucked her in that bathroom and got it over with, get her out of my system.

I focused on the only trait of hers I despised. That temper tantrum she threw after seeing her ruined clothes told me she was nothing but an airheaded bimbo. Superficial and materialistic. After a couple of minutes, I had convinced my brain that was all she was.

Distractions came at a high cost and I had more pressing matters to attend to. One of them was walking straight towards me as I exited the elevator back at AD.

“Mr. Mercier, what brings you to this side of the country? I thought we would call you once we had the first drafts ready,” I saluted the old man my father was so eager to get into business with.

“Liam, it’s always good to see you,” he replied, patting my shoulder as we shook hands, “I came to support the Mayor in the bid to bring the Formula One race to New York. Seems like he can use all the support he can get.”

“Mixing business with pleasure, I see.” There was something about this man that didn’t inspire any confidence. I had eyes on the back of my skull every time we met for no specific reason other than a strong gut feeling.

“No harm, no foul, right? With my support, I secured his. The City’s Department of Buildings has just signed off on the paperwork to start the Verten construction. The project will pass inspection, whatever it is.” If I had any doubts Mr. Mercier dabbled in less than lawful circles, he had just cleared them all. “I hear you’ll be in charge.”

“That’s correct,” I replied with a fake smile, sensing his reticence.

“It’s a big and important project meant for more seasoned professionals. I thought your father would be supervising it himself.”

“There’s nothing he can do that I can’t. Verten is in good hands, Mr. Mercier. Don’t worry.” He nodded in acceptance, even if reluctantly, while stepping into the elevator.

“Don’t disappoint me then, and everything will be just fine.” Was that a threat? I narrowed my eyes, my face failing to hide the annoyance his little nuance had filled me with. “Oh, and Liam? Have fun with that one for me, will ya?” He finally said, pointing to the conference room just before the doors closed.

Chapter 3

Jamie

Walking like a child in her mother’s heels, I rushed over to AD’s building, mumbling incoherent cusses along the way, half lost between hope and defeat. There was no way I would ever get there on time.

I held one hand over my overly pronounced cleavage as I walked as fast as I could, trying to cover up what shouldn’t be on display in the first place. My judgment had been a little off when I thought this wouldn’t be too revealing.

It didn’t matter now, because finally, here I was, ready to shoot my shot, if I still had one in the first place.

I stared at my reflection on the glassy building, home to one of the most prestigious architectural firms in the world, my own image harshly judging me for my state. I did my best to tame the wild nest my hair had become from the morning breeze and obstacle course I’d run to get here, but I could only do so much.

If it weren’t for that smug, handsome asshole, I would have been here as planned — on time, without looking as if I’d plugged my fingers in an outlet.

My confidence was now vanishing like melting ice in the summer. To be honest, I wasn’t sure what I was still even doing here.

I wouldn’t hire myself!

Being late for the interview, looking like a mad woman gasping for her next breath, didn’t exactly scream, ‘Hire me, I’m trustworthy.’

But what did I have to lose? I’d be going back to Jacksonville with my tail unwillingly snuggled between my legs if I couldn’t somehow pull my weight.

Game. Over.

It was only when my lungs burned that I noticed that those thoughts had my breath caught in my throat and my heart sinking to my feet.

Get it together, Jamie. You are not going back to that.

I took a sharp breath, drawing strength and hope from deep within my gut, as I walked into the pristine space with my head held high. Fake it ‘till you make it.

I let the massive foyer swallow me whole as I took in the grandness of the triple-height-ceiling space. White marble coated the floor while light wood accentuated a feature wall right across the entrance where a slim, stainless-steel sign hung proudly behind the reception counter — AD Architects.

No expenses have been spared here, that much is clear.
