“It seems like your company hasn’t been treating you right. I’ll just leave you my phone number here, and you can call me if you change your mind.” She said while scribbling on a napkin.

“Liam, I don’t think this lady speaks English properly,” Jamie said from behind me, my lips involuntarily stretching into a smirk before I turned around to face her. “Let’s see if she understands it better this way.”

Jamie moved to stand between my legs, her hands sliding up my chest, coming to rest on my shoulders before her lips met mine in a slow kiss that breathed possession. Under her touch, my demons came to a still, reality shrinking to a detail as Jamie took her place in the center of my universe.

Our audience had disappeared when Jamie pulled away while I sat there still stunned by her boldness.

“Can I still take you up on that offer to escort me?” She asked, a pink, natural blush rising to her cheeks.

“It’s my pleasure,” I replied, standing and offering my hand for her to take. I twirled her around, allowing my eyes to roam her body, taking in the goddess before me. “You look absolutely incredible.”

“Thank you.” Her voice was small and shy, her lashes batting a million times in a row. She’d taken the compliment, but I was sure she noticed my tone was off.

I wasn’t lying, I never do. But I had caged my decision in a diamond drawer, one that Jamie had just shattered to pieces with a feather kiss and a black silk dress.

I was at war with myself, and I couldn’t let my heart win this time around.

“I’m sorry, Liam,” Jamie said just before entering the limo, turning back to me, coming to stand just a whisper away from me, her hand smoothing out the lapel of my black tux. “I didn’t mean to imply that you were trying to buy my affection. I was just caught up thinking how many women you’d bought dresses and fancy gifts for. It seemed so natural to you, like you’d done it so many times before, it was nothing but a reflex now. I hated feeling like I’m just another one of them.”

Fuck. A damn feather! A damn fucking feather kiss slayed my resolve without the possibility of resurrection.

I cupped her cheek, looking deep into her eyes until I’d reached her soul. I needed her to feel my words there, carve them into the core of her essence until she believed me. “You, Miss Harden, are very far from being one of them.”

Chapter 22

Jamie

If regret could kill, I’d be as good as gone by now.

I’d choke if I bit my tongue after what I said to Liam on that damn airplane, but it was like there was a mixture of things running through my veins that I couldn’t properly process.

Fear and jealousy combining in a stupid need to pick a fight with him.

Something. Anything that could take my brain off being inside that flying coffin. Anything that could poke at the man I yearned for, trying to figure out how he’d react.

After all, there had only been one man in my life. The one who was supposed to love me unconditionally, and yet, all my life he had done the exact opposite.

There’d been no violence in Liam’s reaction, no bloodlust in his eyes despite the derogatory remarks I’d made. And despite having my stomach in a tight knot because of the fight and feeling that Liam was pulling away from me, there was a foreign sense of relief running through my body.

I was safe with him. My mind had told me that again and again, but somehow, my past was a ghost that still lingered.

I had five hours of peace to think, and each passing minute of Liam’s silence was weighing heavier on my heart. It was clear that despite what he was, I was undoubtedly his.

So arriving at the hotel and seeing he had booked separate rooms was a blow I wasn’t expecting. The icing on the cake? Liam turned his back to me, marching to the reception area and leaving me alone. Dropping the gentlemanly gestures was completely out of character for him, showing me just how hard my words had hit.

There were dresses spread out on the massive bed once I got to my room, accessories and shoes to go with all of them. Right in the middle, there was a small box and an envelope.

I hope you love the dresses the way I’m sure my brother will love to peel them off you.

And if you’re still having doubts, there’s a little gift from me to get you through the trip alone.

Love you, girl.

Alison

I smiled to myself as I read her words, a sigh of relief escaping my mouth knowing that she was the one behind Liam’s solution to my predicament.

I picked up the red box, tugging on the exaggerated bow to open it. My eyes bulged as I saw what was inside, a fit of laughter filling my heart with lightness. There was a small pink bullet vibrator lying on top of a lacy black set of lingerie.
