When we step back onto the deck, the lights are turned off and the candles on the table are lit. The flames flicker with the warm breeze.

Mara whispers from behind me, “This is so romantic.”

I hand Damien his wine glass as he pulls out my seat.

“Tonight, we are having grilled lobster tail with clarified butter, asparagus, and garlic smashed potatoes.”

He places a plate in front of me as Seth places a plate in front of Mara.

“And don’t forget, we still have some lobster puffs left.” Seth says as he takes his seat next to Mara.

“How about a toast?” I ask.

The others nod and lift their glasses.

I look around at them and say, “To the three best friends a girl could have.”

Mara adds, “To our futures.”

We all exchange lovey eyes and friendly smiles before taking a sip of our wine and cider in Mara’s case.

“I was going to wait until after dinner, but I feel too nervous to eat right now.” Damien pushes his seat back and turns to face me.

Mara gasps from the other side of the table.

“Shaela, over a year ago, I met you on this very beach and my life was forever changed. You are as beautiful as you are smart, as caring as you are kind. You always put others' feelings before your own, including mine. You encourage me to reach my goals and dreams.”

My eyes start to water as he says, “I couldn’t ask for a better person to share my life with.”

He kneels in front of my chair and grabs my hand before continuing. “I promise to be the best version of myself each and every day and not only tell you, but also show you I love you more than the previous day. Will you marry me?”

He opens the blue velvet ring box and shows me a gorgeous cushion cut diamond ring with smaller diamonds in the rose gold band.

“Yes! Absolutely yes!” I lean forward and kiss him, forgetting our dinner on the table.

This kiss is unlike any we have shared before.

I can feel the relief that is coursing through his veins.

I can feel his happiness and excitement.

Breaking the kiss, I say, “When did you have time to get a ring?”

I would have noticed his absence since he is always at work or home.

“You don’t think we’ve been tossing the football around the entire time, do you? We went yesterday afternoon while the two of you were riding your bikes.”

His grin widens as my mouth forms a perfect O.

He slips the gorgeous ring onto my finger. It’s a perfect fit.

“You two are so sneaky.” I lean forward to resume our kiss.

“You love me anyway.” His lips press against mine, both of us smiling.

Mara clears her throat, drawing our attention to the opposite side of the table.

“Not to ruin your moment or outdo you Damien,” she says quoting him from earlier, “But since everyone here is best friends and tonight is a celebration, I have something I want to share.”
