I try to keep my expression shocked, but I fail miserably. I let out a laugh, and she joins in.

She pulls on my hand until I’m standing. “Let’s dance.”

I follow her down the hallway to the makeshift dance room. She drags me to the center of the packed room.

Looking around, I don’t see her date. “What happened to your date?”

She waves me off as she twirls around and shakes her ass to the beat of the music. “He’s not interesting. I need a man, not a boy, who’s obsessed with video games.”

Damien isn’t into video games. Or at least he wasn’t during spring break.

“Well, we always have each other.”

I know Mara will always be there for me no matter what, and I’d do the same for her.

“Girlfriends for life.”

We dance to the music and let the worries of guys flow away.

Loud cheering in the hallway draws my attention to the crowd of guys chugging beer through a beer funnel.

When the first guy finishes, he throws the beer funnel on the ground and cheers louder. “Yeah! I rule!”

The other guys finish their beers and cheer with the first guy.

“How do people find that attractive?”

Mara laughs. “To each their own.”

Several students that are dancing near Mara and I cheer along with the fraternity guys and pull them toward the dance floor.

The once safe area immediately morphs into a mosh pit with pushing and shoving. Add excessive drinking to the mix and we have a recipe for disaster.

The drunk guys jump and yell as several of them chug another beer. They throw their empty cans towards the trash can in the room's corner, but none of them make it inside.

Like before, they jump and shove one another, bumping into me.

The impact is fast and hard, and I fall towards the floor, rolling my ankle in the process.

“Ow! Fuck!” I grab my throbbing ankle as the guys move their party to another room.

Mara helps me stand, and with her help, I hobble over to the couch.

I glance towards the pain, wincing when I try to move my foot.

My ankle is swelling.

And fast.

This just made my life more complicated than I ever imagined it could be.

“I think I need to see a doctor.”

Chapter Eight

Today did not go well.

To be honest, this entire week has been pure shit.
