The tone of the person speaking sounds higher pitched than the other person’s.

It must be a female’s voice.

Maybe he is talking to someone on speakerphone.

I don’t really want to think about the alternative, but those thoughts creep into my mind.

Would Damien really ignore me while having another woman in his office?

Needing to know the answer to my unasked question, I knock on the door and wait for him to come open it.

Inside the office, the conversation immediately stops, and a desk chair screeches as it’s pushed across the floor. A few moments later, the door opens.

To my surprise, it isn’t Damien who is standing on the opposite side of the door. It’s the same teacher as always.

She has been everywhere since I’ve seen her in the cafe with Damien, and she was just in his classroom a little while ago to tell us to get started.

What is she doing in his office now?

Is he really in there with her alone?

Does he care what it may look like to other students?

Does he care what I will think about it?

Chapter Twelve

The teacher looks me up and down and snipes, “What do you need?”

“Oh, um, I’m here to see Professor-” My statement is cut off.

She raises her hand to stop me. “He’s busy.”

“Okay. Is he in there? I promise it will be quick. Just a yes or no answer from him.” I try to keep it vague, but she doesn’t budge.

She closes the door almost all the way and looks into the office for a moment before cracking the door open a few inches and turning back to me.

“He’s busy. If you tell me what this is regarding, I’ll give him the message.”

Do I trust her?

Nope. My mind doesn’t hesitate.

Hell no, I don’t trust her.

I quickly think up a lie. “He was going to write me a letter of recommendation and help me look for jobs in my field since graduation is quickly approaching.”

She seems to believe the lie temporarily before saying, “He’s not a counselor. It would be best to seek out yours and he or she can write you a letter of recommendation and find you available jobs that are suitable for your degree.”

Wow. Talk about being rude.

“Okay. Thank you.” I say politely, but don’t move.

She purses her lips, clearly annoyed at our interaction. “Is there anything else you need?”

“Umm, no, I guess not.”

I was hoping Damien would hear me and come to the door, but he doesn’t. Annoyance, anger, disbelief, and sadness fill my heart.
