How could he sit there and listen to me ask for him and not get up?

How could he see my text messages and calls and not answer or respond? Even a quick message would be better than total silence.

“Well, he doesn’t have time for you right now. Come back later, if you must. Now go away.” She swiftly turns and closes the door.

I hear the lock click into place before turning around and heading back outside.

Something doesn’t seem right. I know Damien avoids talking to me in public, but I don’t think he would ignore me like this unless something else is going on.

I head outside, grab my phone, and dial Mara’s number.

She answers on the first ring. “Hey, what’s going on?

“I’m so sorry to be interrupting your time with a certain someone, but I need your help.”

She chuckles. “You’re not interrupting anything. What’s going on?”

“I need your journalistic eyes and ears. We might need to do some deep recon, like super stalker mode.”

I chuckle as I imagine us in all black attire, rolling and sneaking around campus.

“Okay…” She pauses and whispers something to her friend. “So, what happened after we separated? You went to Damien’s office, and then what?”

“Does your man friend know about my situation?” I ask bluntly.

Did she talk about my love problems with someone she just started talking to?

“Yes, but he won’t say anything. Trust me.” She clears her throat. “So, what happened at the office?”

“His office light was on, and people were talking inside, but when I knocked on the door, Miss Tall and Blonde opened it and stood in the doorway.”

Mara lets out a loud scoff.

I continue. “She kept saying Damien was busy and even after I came up with a lie for why I was there, he still didn’t come to the door. So, I need your help figuring out what the hell is going on.”

“Of course, I’ll help you. No doubt about it.” Mara says over the phone.

“I just need to get to the bottom of what is going on and why he is so up and down right now. He’s affectionate one day, and then he gives me the cold shoulder the next.”

Mara sighs from the other end of the phone. “It was just a kiss since we’ve been back from spring break.”

Mara doesn’t sound too confident, but then again, why would she when I haven’t told her the full truth?

“Well…” I whisper.

“There’s more!” She exclaims. “Oh my God, what happened? When did it happen? Most importantly, where did it happen?”

“Well, it was more than one kiss and then there was one night…”

Her excited scream has me pausing again.

“Where?” she demands to know. “Where were you when it happened?”

I hesitate. Do I really want her to know where Damien and I got it on? That could result in endless teasing from her.

“Don’t be shy,” Mara says in a low chuckle.

“In the classroom.” I mumble low enough for her to not be able to hear.
