Jumping to my feet, I grabbed the kid and slapped my hand across his mouth. “You know kids. They say the darndest things.”

“Cameron?” Pyro growled.

Before I could stop him, the fucking brat licked my hand then shouted, “It’s his True Fucking Betty.”

My brothers all doubled over laughing as Pyro and Skylar stared daggers at me.

Yep, I was a dead man.

Using the kid as a shield, I slowly backed away. “Come on, kid. We’ve got manly shit to do.”

Bolting out the back door of the kitchen with Cameron over my shoulder, my brothers’ laughter spilled out behind me as I ran for my life.

“I say we run away.” Cameron frowned, sitting on the pile of manure, watching me shovel shit into the garden I was building. “We don’t need any more girls round here. Got enough already.”

Smirking, I threw another pile of manure into the raised garden bed in my greenhouse and sighed. “You can’t run from everything, kid. Life will pass you by if you do.”

“Still ain’t right,” he huffed. “We’re best buds. If your T.F.B. shows up, who will I hang out with?”

“You still have Frank and the rest of the brothers. Don’t worry, kid. I’m not going anywhere.”

“Frank’s cool.” Cameron nodded, pondering what I said. “But we do real man shit. A woman ain’t gonna wanna do what we do.”

“You don’t know that, Cameron. Some girls like playing in mud and climbing trees.”

“None I ever met. All the girls at my school are sissy-babies. Ain’t a single one of them ever played with Fred, and he’s a cool bullfrog,” Cameron stated flatly, then sighed. “Scribe?”

“Yeah.”

“What if your T.F.B. doesn’t like me?”

That stopped me short.

Sticking the shovel in the pile of manure, I sat next to him.

“Why would you ask something like that, Cameron?”

It wasn’t like Cameron to think such things. The kid was a pistol any given day, so it was strange to see him so sullen.

“Because I’m a pain in the ass.”

Frowning, I carefully asked, “Did someone say that to you?”

The kid nodded. “I heard my teacher telling the cafeteria lady the other day. My teacher doesn’t like me.”

“Mr. Zimmerman. He’s your teacher, right?”

“Yeah. He’s a douche. He’s always yelling at me to be quiet and stop shouting out the answers. He even put me in the corner last week ‘cause I corrected him in front of everyone. Not my fault the asshole can’t add correctly.”

“Did you tell Skylar or Pyro?”

“Naw.” Cameron shook his head. “Sissy’s still hurting and Pyro needs to take care of her. I can handle Mr. Zimmerman myself.”

“Still, he shouldn’t have said that and you should have come to one of us. Mr. Zimmerman is a teacher and needs to watch his damn mouth.”

“He’s always on his phone. He’s not a very good teacher. Can I switch to Ms. Violet’s class? Benny really likes her. Every Friday she brings snacks from the coffee shop.”

I smirked, hugging the kid to me. “Let me see what I can do. But in the meantime, you need to tell someone if something’s wrong, Cameron. You have a whole clubhouse full of brothers who have your back. Anyone messes with you, they mess with all of us. Understood?”
