“They’re wonderful.”

Hugging me back, she whispered, “They’re nuts.”

“Ms. Never?”

Releasing my sister, I turned to find the new sheriff, Mike Brewer, smiling at me. “Thank you for coming, but your sister took care of everything.”

“I don’t understand?” I asked confused, as all the tension and worry I was feeling from before fled my body. While the thought of speaking to the Feds elevated my anxiety into the stratosphere, I knew it was something that needed to be done.

“You honestly didn’t think I was going to let you deal with those assholes by yourself, did you?”

“But I thought they needed to speak with me,” I muttered as I felt Scribe reach for me, pulling me into his embrace, holding me tightly to him.

“What’s going on?” King asked.

Sheriff Mike sighed, thumbing his thumb towards Devlyn, who smiled proudly. “This one is a pain in the ass. Devious, but still a pain. All you need to know is that Devlyn gave the Feds everything they needed to file formal charges against the mayor and his wife. The investors have backed out of the land deal. I guess Rosewood is going to have to deal with one less ski resort. Place is too fucking crowded during the season, anyway.”

“So, it’s all over then?” I asked hopefully, looking at the man.

“As far as I’m concerned, it is. There is, however, the sexual harassment complaint you filed, but the Feds assured me that the mayor will get what’s coming to him.”

“Yeah, some big boy named Bubba is gonna make the mayor his little bitch,” Bailey snickered as the brothers moaned.

“And on that note, I’m going home.” Devlyn smirked. “Got love for all of you, but you guys are exhausting. Sis, call me later.”

With that, my sister held her head high as she walked out of the sheriff’s station.

“I feel sorry for the man who falls in love with that woman. He’s gonna need balls of steel,” Mike quipped.

Grinning, I agreed.

“And you believed him!” Bailey shouted at King, causing several people to look our way. After leaving the sheriff’s office, we all headed over to Beth’s coffee shop. While I just wanted to go home to my small cabin, the others wanted to pop in for a cup of coffee.

“Cupcake, if you don’t lower your voice,” King growled ominously.

“You’ll what, asshole,” Bailey shot back. “I’m on borrowed time. Don’t you see? He’s gonna get me back. He has to. It’s the code!”

King groaned, rubbing his hands down his face. “Woman, his president ordered him to stand down. That trumps any fucking code.”

“No, it doesn’t. You don’t know him like I do. He’s plotting. Planning everything out right now, and when he’s ready, he’s gonna make his move.”

“She’s got a point, Prez,” Priest snickered. “That sounds a lot like Scribe.”

“When have you ever known him to just let something go?” Enigma asked.

“They are right, King,” Pyro agreed.

“See! They get it,” Bailey sneered. “Listen to your merry band of misfits. Even they know it’s coming.”

All eyes turned to the man in question, who was at the counter flirting with Beth. Shaking my head, I smirked. “While I’m new to this group, even I’ve got to admit I wouldn’t put anything past him. From what I’ve seen, he doesn’t seem to be the kind of person to let things go.”

“Because he doesn’t.” Freyja nodded, backing me up. “I know my brother. He may look like a lovable goofball, but underneath all his bravado, he’s a devious trickster who loves a good payback.”

Bailey sighed, laying her head on the table. “I’m dead.”

“Who’s dead?” the man of the hour asked, placing a tray of coffees and delights on the table. “Here, Bails, I got your favorite.”

All eyes watched as Scribe picked up a large cup of coffee, placing it before his best friend, who stared at the cup as if something foul was about to jump out at her.
