"A real one indeed. I hate to leave a beautiful woman alone." I flushed at the compliment. "But I really do have to go. Maybe we'll see each other again."

He rose from his seat. I wanted to give him my number, my email, any way at all for him to contact me, but I didn't want to come across as desperate.

Instead, I smiled at him coyly. "Maybe."

He pulled out his wallet and extracted a few bills, then dropped them on the table. "Get another coffee on me."

"You don't need to-"

"Like I said earlier, it's my pleasure."

With one more smirk aimed at me, Alexander strode away, and my eyes stayed fixed on his sculpted backside until he was out of the coffee shop.

Izzy rushed back into her seat. "The chemistry between you guys is insane. Did you get his number?"

I shook my head distractedly, regretting my decision to maintain my dignity. I sighed. Oh well. I supposed it was for the best. I had a new job to focus on. The last thing I should be doing was screwing around with my ex's older brother.

That didn't stop me from having sinful dreams about Alexander that night. Or the nights that followed.

...

A skyscraper. That was where I would be working. A beautiful, glass skyscraper. I pressed my phone to my ear, leaning against my car to admire the tall building.

I adjusted my simple black pencil skirt, tightened my hold on my purse, and then began my walk to the entrance.

Tucking a strand behind my ear, I considered quickly pulling my hair into a ponytail but then decided against it.

"I just got here," I told Izzy over the phone. The doorman smiled and greeted me as I passed. I responded in kind.

"I'm so excited for you. New haircut, new job. It's good for you. It'll be a nice distraction from," there was a pause and then she said in a hushed voice, "He-who-shall-not-be-named."

I rolled my eyes even though she couldn't see me. "He's not Voldemort, Izzy; you can say his name." I walked into the office, smiled at the receptionist, and made my way into the elevator. The inside of the building was brightly lit, showing off the expensive furniture. "I don't care about that prick anymore."

"Are you sure?"

"Of course. Chris is the last thing on my mind and the last thing I want to think about on my first day. The only thing I care about is this job." My shoulders sagged. "I'm so relieved I got it."

My last job was fine. Well, as fine as it could be with pay slightly above minimum wage, and a bunch of sexist jerks as co-workers. I had been more of a glorified coffee girl than a secretary, and my joy at finally resigning was palpable.

"Of course, you did. You're amazing."

I walked onto the top floor of the building, passing multiple offices as I went. There were a few people there and they all offered me polite smiles, which I returned.

I settled down at the desk in the hallway opposite the door marked CEO. I slouched into the comfy leather seat and spun around in my chair. "Thank you for the compliment, but honestly, I really don't know how I landed this job. I know for a fact that there were people more qualified than I am."

I thought back to the day of my interview. There were numerous women who had applied for the position of secretary to the CEO of Haynes Enterprises. Intelligent, talented, and multilingual women with multiple certificates who had more experience than my three years at a slightly popular online shopping company.

I'd been greatly intimidated and, by the end of the interview, I was sure there wasn't a chance of me being chosen for the position. I wasn't the worst candidate, but I certainly wasn't the best either.

Receiving the email that named me the new secretary was one of the best moments in my life.

"Well, that doesn't matter since you were the one who got hired." There was another pause. "Is your boss there already? Is he hot?"

I traced my finger over the desk’s smooth wooden surface with a smile. This was definitely a step up from my last job. I was grateful for the change. A chance to do more than memorize coffee orders and get bagels. Another thing I was grateful for was the huge increase in my salary. Maybe I'd finally be able to get a new car or cable TV.

I sighed and rolled my shoulders. "No, he isn't, and I don't care if he's hot. I'm here to work, Izzy." Heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway and another sigh passed through my lips. "I'll talk to you later. Someone's coming, and I think it might be my boss."

"Okay. Have a good first day. I love you."
