I shook my head as I turned to face him. "I can explain."

"We used to date," Chris clarified. "She's my ex-girlfriend. I cheated on her, she got mad, so she decided to sleep with you to get back at me."

Alexander's expression was unreadable. His eyes were not. Hurt shone in them, bright and obvious. "That isn't true right? Tell me that isn't true. Tell me that what we have isn't just part of some revenge scheme."

"Of course, it's not. I don’t -"

He nodded to his brother. "He's the ex-boyfriend, isn't he? The one you used to talk about. The person who called that day in the office, that was him."

"You talked about me, but you didn't tell him who I really was? Wow. You're full of surprises, Sophia. Way more devious than I gave you credit for."

"Shut up, Chris."

"I can't believe how low you went though. Sleeping with my brother?"

"Shut up, Chris." That time it was Alexander who spoke. Chris held up his hands in mock surrender.

"Alright. I guess I should be leaving now." He patted Alexander's shoulder roughly. "Have fun with my sloppy seconds."

Alexander shook his hand off but was still staring at me. With one last look in my direction, Chris strode out of the room. The songs of the birds were the only sounds that could be heard in the office.

Alexander looked away from me. He nodded to himself. "You dated my brother."

It wasn't a question, but I still found myself replying, "Yes. Only for about six months. And it was a while ago."

"You're sleeping with me to get back at him?"

I shook my head. "Of course not."

"Don't lie to me, Sophia. I can't believe this. So, what has our whole relationship been a lie? Did you mean any of the things you said? Was this just one big trick? A way to piss off my brother?"

"Of course not," I repeated. I reached for him but he avoided my hands. "It's not like that at all."

"You're telling me you didn't date my brother."

"No. I mean, I did."

"And you didn't know who I was when you started flirting with me?"

"Yes, I did." I brushed my hair back. "I didn't get a chance to explain to Izzy at the coffee shop which was why she -"

"You knew since the coffee shop?" He took a deep breath. "So, from the very beginning, everything was a lie? You knew who I was the second I sat down across from you, but you just never mentioned it to me?"

"There was never a good time."

"There wasn't a good time? How about all the times we spoke? The times Chris came up in our conversations? The time I caught you arguing with him on the phone? You had a million opportunities to tell me, and you didn't. You've been lying to me for months."

"It wasn't a lie. Well, it was. A little bit. It started out that way. I wanted to get back at Chris for how he treated me. I was angry, frustrated, and lonely. I just wanted to do something. I wanted Chris to regret what he did."

"And you thought the best way to get revenge would be what? Sleeping with me? Getting me to develop feelings for you? I was supposed to be your pawn or something?"

"No, it wasn't like that. It was just supposed to be fun." My head was beginning to feel light again. I stared at my feet. "And don't act innocent. You wanted to sleep with me too."

"Because I was attracted to you. I thought you were gorgeous. It wasn't because I had a personal vendetta against your sibling."

"That's not how it is. It's not a vendetta. It was just a stupid thought. And it's only how I felt in the beginning."

"And now? How do you feel now? Is this still some plot?"
