“I'll start making breakfast.” He kissed her again, then Lo was back.

“Sorry, he just left. I'm hanging out in Kaden's room. We bought this amazing nursing chair. I swear it's the comfiest thing ever.”

“No need to apologise. God, you guys are so cute, it's disgusting.” We both laughed, knowing full well I didn't mean it. My best friend deserved all the happiness in the world, and being with Ben made her glow.

“How is Roy feeling? Is he okay?”

“Ish,” I hedged. “Meeting that bitch at the club was hard, but I think it might have been good for him. Having us step up for him, seeing that he's not alone.”

“I guess sleeping with his hot roommate helps, too.”

“Yeah, I guess,” I said without thinking.

“Gotcha.”

Fuck.

She chuckled. “Like I said, not judging. Can't really blame you anyway, they're addictive.”

I almost spit out my coffee. “Lo, seriously!”

“What? Barbs for the win is all I'm saying.”

“Does Dex know you're living together?” Her question effectively sobered me up.

“Not yet. I'll tell him today. Not about the barbs, though.”

“That's probably for the best. But yeah, tell him. I wish I'd been honest withhim from the start. He's a good guy.”

“I know, I'm just nervous. I really don't want to mess this up.”

“I get it. He knows how amazing you are. He might need a bit of time to come 'round, but he will.”

We were definitely not talking about our boss anymore. “Thanks, Lo.”

“Anytime, babes.”

“I'll see you real soon, okay? Go have your breakfast now, and let your baby daddy pamper you until Kaden's done cooking.”

Lo sniffed. “I can't believe I'm going to have a baby soon. I'm not ready for this.”

“You're going to be the best mama, I know it. And you've got Ben, and all the people who love you.”

“Yeah,” she breathed.

“Love you.”

“Love you too, Kat.”

My heart was hammering when I made my way to Dexter's office at lunch time. I rapped my fingers on his doorframe and peered in to find him sitting at his desk.

“Kat, come in.” Leaning back in his chair, he stretched his arms, ruffled his wings and gave me a weak smile.

“Hey, boss. Youlook awful. Is little Nash giving you a run for your money?”

His large grey face split into the gooey smile of first-time parents. “He’s teething and his wings are developing. Gloria and I haven’t been getting a lot of sleep lately.”
