Ryan And Carly

I’d watched her for five days, and she still hadn’t woken up; I stretched with my hands over my head, sitting in the chair, closed my eyes, and dozed off momentarily. When I opened my eyes, Carly was watching me.

I stood and walked over to the bed. “How are you feeling? I’ll call the nurse,” I pushed the button.”

“Can I help you?”

“Carly’s awake.”

“I’ll be right there.”

“What are you doing here?”

“I’m here to stay. From this moment on, we won’t ever be separated again. I love you, Carly. I’ve always loved you, and we both know that. Life is too damn short to be apart. When you leave this hospital, you’re going home with me.”

“I must have really hurt my head. I thought I heard you say we would always be together.”

“Yep, you heard right.”

“Listen to me, Ryan. I’m not going anywhere you go. We do not belong together. You belong with one of your girlfriends, and that is not me.”

The nurse walked in, and I stepped back out of the way. But not for long. I walked around the bed to the other side.

The nurse started taking Carly’s blood pressure and temperature. “How do you feel? Are you hurting anywhere?”

“My entire body hurts, but mostly my head. I must have hit something pretty hard.”

“It was a tree. You kicked the gun out of one of those kidnapper's hands before he shot me. And the other one kicked you hard, and you flew back and hit the tree.”

“Just because I stopped him from shooting you doesn’t mean I want to go home with you. It doesn’t matter if we love each other. I’ve loved you since I was fifteen; I’m not sure you even know what love is. Don’t you think we would have been together if you loved me?”

“I’m fixing all of that. I was angry and heartbroken when you married Jim Harlow. I didn’t want to ever talk to you, even though I loved you. I wasn’t sure you loved me.”

“You are the one who brought that skank home. You broke my heart, I heard you were home, and like an idiot, I ran to be with you, and there you were with your damn arm around that HO. Don’t try and put this off on me marrying that mean Jim Harlow. The only reason I did that was because my heart was shattered.”

“I want you to leave. You’re bringing up all that hurt I suffered every time I saw you with a different woman.”

“Being with a different woman should tell you that none of them were important to me. That’s because I only love you.”

I heard a noise and turned. Viper and Bailey were there smiling. Bailey rushed to the bed, “How do you feel?”

“I want you and Viper to get that crazy man out of here. He’s talking a bunch of nonsense and telling me where I’m going to live when I get out. He’s pretending to love me. Make him leave.”

“We all know you and Ryan love each other, so why not give it a chance? You might be surprised and wish you had talked it over years ago,” Viper said, trying to get Carly to agree.

“How could we talk years ago? I was married, and Jim said he would kill Ryan if I tried talking to him,” I knew she wished she hadn’t said that. I looked at her, and then I took her hand.

“If you would have told me what he was doing to you, I would have killed him. That bastard deserved to die for laying one damn finger on you. I’m so sorry I didn’t get you away from him when you first married. I have loved you forever, and let my pride keep me from you.”

“Stop saying that. I don’t want to hear it anymore. We let it go for too long. I moved away so that I wouldn’t have to see you again. It hurts too much seeing you with other women. I don’t think you could stick with just one woman.”

“I can’t believe you said that. You know I love you.”

“How do I know that when you have never told me you love me?”

“Yes, I have. When you were eighteen, I told you we would be together one day forever.”
