“I haven’t ever driven past Reno, we should take a drive to Utah and see what it’s all about.”

“It’s all about sand and tumbleweeds. There’s not much to see until you get to Salt Lake City,” Randy said.

“Well now we have to do it. I mean even if it’s boring it could still be fun.” I laughed, and he looked at me and grinned. He’d relaxed so much the past few months, and I hoped it had to do with the two of us being together. Being with him made me so happy and I hoped I did the same for him.

“Like I said, as long as I don’t have to drive.”

“You never know, there might be some businesses there that would love your cookies,” I said.

“Our cookies,” he corrected. “Remember we put a little love in each one.”

“How could I forget that.”

It was getting darker and when we turned off onto the main road that would lead to downtown Tahoe excitement bubbled up in me. Seeing the glow of the lights reflected on the night sky also made me anxious to get there. We drove alongside the lake for a while, and I glanced at it a few times but couldn’t see much past a few random lights reflected on it in the distance. “I wish it was light enough to see the lake. I haven’t been here for a long time.”

“Me either, but if we stay, we’ll see it tomorrow.”

“I’m so glad Aunt Carol gave me tomorrow off,” I said, without thinking.

“You have it off?” Randy asked, his voice full of excitement.

“Yes, she said not to worry about it, and said not to show up tomorrow.”

“Now I really do wish we’d booked a room. Hopefully we’re able to find something.” His brow creased in worry before he glanced out toward the dark water. It was on the tip of my tongue to say something, but I knew it would be better once he knew. And it was too close now to ruin it.

“Don’t worry, there’s always an open room somewhere, and we’re not picky so it’ll be fine.” I reached my hand across the console and held his. The road straightened out as we got closer to Tahoe, and the darkness gave way to the lights of the small city located on the edge of the most beautiful lake I’d ever seen.

“Oh my god, I can’t believe we’re here,” Randy said, and leaned forward to get a better look. There were still remnants of snow on the sides of the mountains but the city itself looked like there had never been snow here at all. The casinos’ lights were all bright and cheerful, promising potential riches if you’d only give them a chance.

I followed the directions to the hotel and was thankful that I’d memorized it, so I didn’t need to keep checking my phone. As we drove past the last casino, Randy turned to look at me. “Where are you going?” he asked.

“Just up here.” I pointed in the direction of the hotel we were booked into. He craned his neck and read the sign before looking at me.

“Are we parking here?”

“Not exactly,” I said, and pulled up to the parking attendant at the entrance. “Let’s get our stuff.” I turned the car off and handed the attendant the key, still without really telling Randy what was going on. He followed my lead, and we took out our bags and the food we’d packed to bring. I also took out a small ice chest that held the food I’d bought with Shelly.

We walked into the hotel and Randy’s eyes widened. It was very open and inviting, with a large fireplace taking up most of one wall with two sofas and several chairs pulled in close to it. Ignoring everything else I walked up to the desk. “Hello, I have a reservation for Eli Canton.”

The man at the front desk tapped out my name on his computer before looking up. “Oh yes, we have you booked in asuite. Did you have any luggage you need help with?” He looked between Randy and me waiting for an answer.

“No, we’ve got it all.”

“Very good, I just need your signature here. And here’s your keycard. Did you need two?”

“Yes please.” I signed the paper he’d given me, and he handed us both a card.

“You’ll want to take that elevator to the fourth floor. Your room is the second on the left. Have a good stay and let us know if we can help in any way.”

“Thank you,” I said, and took Randy—who had yet to say anything—by the hand. I pressed the button for the elevator and as soon as we stepped on board, he turned to look at me.

“So, we’re staying here?” he asked.

“Yes, and I made us reservations for dinner too. But we have time, and it’ll work out perfectly with the show.”

He smiled before pressing me against the wall of the elevator and kissing me. “I love you so much,” he whispered.
