“I really don’t know what Millie is thinking,” she said. “We are not a match.”

My heart sank. “How do you figure?”

She snickered and hung a glittery snowflake on a branch.

“No offense, but I’ve seen your type.”

I scowled and shook my head. “Brielle is not my type.”

“Then why were you with her?”

“It’s complicated.”

“How so?”

I reached for a glass Santa ornament and stared at it. “I felt bad for her. My parents and brothers were against Brielle. And I honestly just kept thinking there had to be substance deep down inside her.”

Daisy studied me silently, and my heart raced as she analyzed what I’d just said.

Great.

I totally sounded like a jerk.

Again.

“Are you saying she was shallow?” Daisy finally asked.

I wandered back to the ornament box and lifted a sparkly snowman out.

“We just didn’t connect. I couldn’t peel back any layers, and the longer I was with her, the more I realized that. She liked that she was dating the owner of a popular bar.”

Daisy nodded and hung a glass icicle. “But she seemed pretty protective around you. How did she take it?”

“The breakup?”

Daisy nodded.

“Not great at first, but I think that’s because when she broke it off and wanted to get back together again for the millionth time, she expected me to take her back again. I don’t think it had anything to do with me as a person. I think she just liked calling the shots, but…” I debated how much to say. I looked over at Daisy, who was clinging to every word. “She wasn’t faithful.”

Her hands slid to her mouth, and she gasped. “I’m so sorry.”

I shrugged, realizing I never felt the emotions I should have felt when I found out about Brielle. But that was another reason I knew there was no repairing anything.

“So, she broke up with you, but you didn’t take her back?”

“Yeah.”

“Hmm. Interesting.” She wandered to her kitchen and opened the fridge. “Would you like a soda or a beer?”

I glanced at the microwave clock. “Well, it is past noon, so I’ll take a beer.”

She chuckled and grabbed two. “Good choice. If we’re going to dig deep into your dating life, we’ll need this liquid courage.”

“Whoa.” My hands shot up in the air. “My dating life? Why would we need to go there at all?”

“Why not?” She chuckled. “I don’t have one, and yours sounds fascinating, complex, and impossible to unwrap.”

“Honestly, it’s not that complicated.”
