She handed me a beer. “You didn’t break things off with her. She broke them off with you.”

“But I didn’t take her back,” I pointed out, clanking my beer to hers. “Cheers.”

“Cheers.” She shook her head and took a swig. “But it didn’t sound like you were into her, yet you didn’t end things on your terms.”

Daisy’s lips pressed against the tip of the bottle, and I couldn’t help my mind from going to places it shouldn’t.

“Are you saying I’m a chicken?”

She winked at me, and my chest squeezed unexpectedly.

“Bock. Bock.”

I laughed, glancing around her home. There was something special about it.

She looked out the window, and her eyes met mine. “The snow is coming down really hard now.”

Daisy walked over to the fireplace and switched it on while I picked up a glass ball ornament.

“It’s kind of nice to have someone help decorate the tree.” She watched me closely, but I didn’t know what to say. I’d pushed my way into this event all because Millie had mentioned that the holidays were hard for Daisy. She didn’t elaborate, but here I was.

“I’m glad you let me force my way into your home without calling the police.”

She chuckled and took a sip of her beer. “I’m not sure whose side Nate would be on, to be honest.” She pushed her lips into a sexy pout. “Especially if the Sunshine Breakfast Club is in on this.”

I cocked my head slightly. “This?”

“You know… pushing us together.”

“You sure that’s what’s going on?”

She didn’t answer but sat down on the couch, pulling a pillow over her lap to prop her elbows and beer on top of it.

I set my bottle down and grabbed a tray of silver balls for the tree. “Well, Nate is more my brothers’ friend. If there were ever a guy to stuff another guy into a locker back in high school, it would have been him.”

My eyes widened. “Our sheriff?”

He nodded. “I mean, he never did it, but I know stories that would blow your mind. He was known as the practical joker of the school.”

“Wow. I never would have guessed.”

She pulled her legs underneath her and stretched toward the ceiling. “But he never stuffed you into one, right?”

I grinned. “No.”

“That’s good.” She smiled and let out a sigh. “I bet you were a jock in high school, and all the cheerleaders wanted you.”

I nearly choked on my beer at her assumption. “Yeah? Where’d you come up with that?”

“Just how you carry yourself.”

I laughed and shook my head, hanging another ornament. “Great. So, I carry myself like a guy stuck in high school.”

She giggled, and the sound was addicting. “No, but you just seem… confident. So, am I right?”

“I wasn’t a football guy, but I did play soccer and baseball.”

She waggled her finger. “I knew it.”
