“Now, how about dinner?” he asked, his eyes resting on mine.

“It’s after midnight.”

Hunter grinned and nodded. “Close to one o’clock now.”

I looked around the sparkling clean bar. “Well, Iamkind of hungry.”

“Awesome. I had the chef whip up our cobb salad for each of us and some of our famous garlic bread.”

“Maybe a leopard can change its spots after all,” I teased.

He laughed, walking toward the kitchen and disappearing before returning with a plate in each hand, making his way to the counter, where I’d pulled down two stools.

“This was thoughtful of you,” I told Hunter as he sat next to me.

“I want to hear all about your first day. Michelle said you were incredible.”

I lifted my shoulders. “What can I say? I remember instructions well.”

Bemusement filled Hunter’s gaze. “That’s right. You have a memory as good as an elephant’s, possibly a dolphin’s.”

I laughed, shaking my head as I took a bite of salad. “So, you do listen to what I say.”

His gaze caught mine, and I suddenly wanted to tell him everything about my life. I wanted to open up to him like I’d never done before, but I couldn’t.

The logical side of me knew I was only here for two more weeks.

Friends or not, I didn’t need to unload my entire life’s history on this poor, unsuspecting guy.

“So, my parents want to have dinner tomorrow at my place,” he started.

“That should work out perfectly since I’m here tomorrow.”

Hunter smiled, nodding. “True.”

“And Saturday, they’re attendingTheNutcracker.”

“Perfect.” I took a bite of bacon and enjoyed the smokiness. “Oh, that reminds me. Michelle said I couldn’t work on Sunday. Is there a reason?”

Hunter grinned and leaned closer. “I was hoping you’d attend the Christmas tree lighting with me. It’s kind of a big deal.”

“I mean, sure. I can do that.”

“Awesome.”

“Is there something more I should know about this ceremony or…?”

Hunter’s smile grew. “No. It’s just down the street at the Waterfront Park.”

“Okay, I’ll dress warm.”

“My parents will be there.”

I couldn’t hide my surprise. “Are you sure that’s a smart idea?”

Hunter shook his head and took a bite of salad. “No, not at all. But they want to be there.”

“This must be some tree lighting.”
