Hunter’s mom studied her son as if she’d never known this side of him existed.

But I knew.

The professor knew.

“He’s an amazing little boy,” Hunter said, shaking his head. “I’m just glad things worked out well.”

“Anyway,” Perry continued despite Hunter’s warning look, “he got really chummy with the staff there and still volunteers, but this year, he did something that touched our family’s heart so much.”

I watched Hunter’s reaction as his friend and employee bragged about him. It was a cross between irritation and unease.

“He donated that money in honor of our son, specifically to cover costs for families who can’t afford the treatment needed.” Perry grinned. “I’m proud to work at a place with an owner like that.”

His brothers stared at Hunter like he’d grown an extra head, but pride weaved throughout everyone.

“I don’t want all this going to my head,” Hunter said, laughing. “But thanks, Perry.”

Perry grinned as Hunter led us to a table overlooking the city sidewalk. He slid two tables together, and everyone got situated while Perry brought the menus.

When everyone found their seat, Hunter cleared his throat and laughed. “Had I known all that other stuff was going to be mentioned, I wouldn’t have invited you.”

His dad laughed. “Figures, but I’m really proud of you.”

Beckett laughed. “The frat boy has grown up.”

Hunter glared at his brother as only siblings did.

“This is an amazing impromptu family reunion,” his mom said, completely giddy.

I looked around the table, feeling at home and hoping that when I returned to Buttercup Lake, I’d still be a part of this somehow.

Even as it was now.

As Hunter’s friend.

“I heard you’re coming back up north sooner than you expected,” his mom said, looking at me over the menu. “Hunter, are you going to miss your housemate?”

Evie eyed her brother, and he nodded.

“Daisy is an amazing roommate.” He slid his hand onto my knee and gently squeezed it.

“And Daisy is kind enough to share her lipstick with him,” his dad revealed.

My cheeks flushed a million shades of pink while laughing with everyone.

“Well, we’re so happy to have you dating our brother,” Cash explained, and my eyes widened.

I quickly shook my head. “Oh, we’re not dating. We’re just—”

“We’re just friends.” Hunter grinned as platters of appetizers came out to the table, with Perry and Michelle delivering them.

Perry rolled his eyes, and I laughed.

Had he picked up on the connection Hunter and I had, too?

Or was I just flirting so obviously that it couldn’t be ignored?

“Oh, right.” Beckett’s wry grin only widened as he looked at Cash. “The oldjust friendstrick.”
