My eyes widened. “Handle what? Babysitting Henry?”

“The moment I met you, I was hooked. I couldn’t stop thinking about you. Ask James. I kept hounding him about you while he was with Amelia.”

I stared at him, pacing back and forth in the kitchen.

He spun around, smiling. His piercing blue eyes locked on mine.

“Emily, I love you.” Lucas shook his head. “I love you more than anything.”

“I love you too.” My heart started beating a little quicker.

Lucas came over, scooted the chair out, and sat in front of me, pulling my hands to his.

“This isn’t how it was supposed to go.” His eyes widened, and he looked extra cute. “I had a plan. A big plan.”

“Plans are good.” I nodded, not knowing where this was headed.

“Emily, you made me dream of the family I never knew I could have. You put me in my place like no one else dared, andyou showed me how important it is to listen and embrace your needs, not just my own.”

Lucas stood and walked over to the refrigerator. He placed his hand on top, scooted some cereal boxes to the side, and spun back around with one of his grandmother’s poetry books in his hand.

He walked back over to me and took a deep breath, kneeling to one knee.

“Emily, I had tonight all planned. I reserved Milo’s, and Rick came up with an amazing menu full of garlic fries, chicken tenders, and his famous mini-burgers.” He smiled. “And then the storm hit, but I can’t wait a single moment longer. I just can’t. I need to know if you’ll be my wife.”

My heart raced as his eyes locked on mine, his words still swirling around me like a dream.

Lucas took my hands in his and placed his grandmother’s poetry book in mine, opening to a page with a bookmark.

I gasped when I saw the ring.

“Emily, will you make me the happiest man in the world? Will you marry me? Will you not make me wait a second longer?”

I could feel happy tears threatening to emerge, so I nodded quickly as I squealed yes. I shot out of the chair and pushed myself into his arms, knocking us both to the floor.

He held me tight, and we couldn’t stop laughing.

And I knew. This right here was what I needed in a man.

The ability to be my friend and laugh.

Lucas let out a low growl when I slowly rolled off as he untied the ring from the book and slid it on my finger. “I am the luckiest man in the universe, Emily Evans.”

Happiness flooded through me as I stared at the man I loved with every part of my being.

“This is my favorite poem, and I thought it described us beautifully,” he said softly.

I went to look down to read it, but he cupped my face in his hands first and brought his lips to mine.

His kiss warmed my soul, and I knew how lucky I was to have found a man who understood me and who I understood.

When his lips parted from mine, I looked down to see the words on the page, and my breath hitched with its beauty. This was a book I didn’t know about.

You were never meant to be caught, my little wildflower,

Petals as vibrant as the sun,

But tender to the touch of some,
