I chuckled, shaking my head. “Did he, now…”

“He did, and he was right. I’d just never paid attention before.”

“Well, news flash.” I glanced at her as I pulled into the parking lot. “I’ve never paid attention either.”

“Hmph.” She brought the pink porcelain poodle closer.

I shut off the car and turned to look at Emily. “But we’re just friends, right? That’s why you’ve stopped texting me back much. It’s why we haven’t hung out much since the kiss.”

She sat silently and dropped her gaze to the poodle.

“You regret it, don’t you?”

Emily didn’t respond.

“You’re keeping me at a distance, and you didn’t want to tell me.”

She brought her gaze to mine. She was so pretty.

“It’s not like that.” She let out a slow breath. “I’ve just been really busy with my grandparents.”

I nodded and drew a breath. “Okay. If that’s your story. I’ll go grab the pizza.”

She smiled at me, but it felt different.

Maybe the kiss wasn’t as mind-blowing for her as it had been for me.

Damn, these thoughts.

I’d never been so confused in my life over a woman.

Then again, I’d never felt this way for someone before.

Ever.

I walked up to the entrance of Pete’s Pizza and opened the door. The immediate smells of sweet tomato sauce and spicy garlic drifted over as I made my way to the counter to pick up the two pizzas and a batch of garlic knots.

Nothing said friendship like a meal of pure garlic.

“Hey, Lucas,” Pete said, smiling. “Long time, no see.”

“It’s been too long.” I nodded in agreement. “But I’m hoping to change that.”

“Oh, yeah?”

“I hope to spend more of the spring and summer here for sure. In fact, I’ll be here next week because I’m watching Brad’s cat.”

Pete flinched and hissed. “Have you gone mad? Everyone knows to stay away from that beast.”

I chuckled, reaching for the boxes.

“Just trying to impress a girl, Pete.”

His brows moved up. “One of the Evans girls.”

I laughed, nodding as I walked toward the exit. “Afraid so.”

“Good luck,” he called and then muttered, “You’ll need it.”
