Emily grinned. “I’ve softened slightly toward him.”

“I have that effect on people.”

“What was it you said?” James joked. “Your plan was to just wear Emily down?”

I snuck a look in Emily’s direction, and surprise washed over her face. “Wear me down, huh?”

“How do you know I wasn’t just wearing you down?” She flashed a wry grin. “Maybe that was my plan all along.”

I reached for her hand and held it in mine. “Well, whatever happened, it worked.”

Emily laughed, and the sound was better than anything the driver could have had on the radio.

I saw the tower come into view as the driver pulled in front to let us out.

Emily looked over at me. “I think if I twist wrong, beads will start exploding from this thing.”

I chuckled and nodded.

“Thank you so much for getting us here safe and sound,” I told the driver as I helped unbuckle Emily.

He gave a quick nod. “My pleasure.”

I opened the door, got out of the car, and helped Emily wiggle out in her dress.

We made our way to the towering building. My parents had rented out the top floor so there’d be a beautiful view of the city to accompany the dinner and dancing.

Amelia and James were behind us as the doorman welcomed us inside and directed us to the elevators.

The ride up was quiet, and I sensed Emily getting nervous, which killed me. She was perfection. She had nothing to be worried about.

The carriage doors opened into a grand ballroom that glittered with opulence. The crystal chandelier cast a soft glow on the tables underneath, which were adorned with enormous floral arrangements.

“How did your parents pull this off in a matter of weeks?”

I laughed, shaking my head as I scanned the room that had already filled with friends, family, and my parents’ coworkers.

Emily and I stood at the entrance while James and Amelia walked toward the open bar.

“You ready?” I asked.

“My heart is racing,” she said softly, looking into my eyes.

I leaned down and swept a soft kiss across her lips. “You have nothing to be worried about. My parents will love you, and they already know you.”

Her smile grew as she ran her fingers along her hips.

“This feels like a fairytale,” Emily whispered as I cupped my hand around hers.

“We'd better find my parents,” I said, tightening my grip around hers.

As Emily made her way through the crowd with me, her gown shimmered from the lights above. She was a masterpiece.

The delicate embroidery weaving together the beadwork paired with the exotic lace was magnificent. She’d styled her hair into a braided crown with a few strands framing her delicate features.

“You look like an angel,” I whispered.

She turned to look at me and cocked her head slightly. “Thank you for always making me feel so beautiful.”
