Charley’s heart tripped in her chest. My woman. Those words melted over her like butter on hot grits and were far more delicious.

He grazed her lips with his. “You gonna shower?”

She was lost in his chocolate eyes, which were filled with something soft and luscious. Something she was scared to label but looked a lot like affection. Deep affection. Possibly more.

“I’d like to but…would you join me?”

The erection lodged between her lower cheeks swelled. “Under normal circumstances, hell, yes. But today, no. You need food. I’m gonna make sure you get it in a timely manner, so that means no doing doubles in the shower.” He grinned, and it was one of the predatory ones. “I’ll take a raincheck.”

That thought sent a shiver through Charley, and Dog laughed. “Go get in the shower before I change my mind.”

“Wouldn’t be the worst thing,” she grumbled as she climbed out of the bed. “There’s a Keurig in the kitchen if you want some coffee. Pods in the cabinet above the machine. Powdered creamer and sugar, too.”

She wasn’t really embarrassed by nudity, but she couldn’t help a glance over her shoulder to see if he was watching. His gaze was glued to her butt. She swung her hips a little harder.

“Stop messing with me and get in the shower,” he growled from the bed.

She rolled her eyes. “Bossy.”

***

Charley opened the bathroom door dressed in 7 for All Mankind skinny jeans and a white Helmut Lang twisted-drape tank, both skillfully acquired during the Neiman Marcus anniversary sale two years ago. She kept a small supply of clothes at the cottage, so she didn’t have to pack much when she came. The tank had a racer back, calling into play a particular bra and panty set she had carefully hidden from Dog when she’d retrieved it from a dresser drawer. She didn’t want to spoil the surprise in case he had the opportunity to see them later. Pale lavender lace with a thong to match. No panty lines in these jeans.

Sadly for her, Dog had his clothes on, too. She guessed he had to get dressed for breakfast, but she missed the view.

He was sitting on a messily-remade bed, coffee cup beside him on the nightstand, and the clock had been set. Eight-oh-five. Still early.

Dog was checking his phone. She’d purposely ignored hers, silenced it even, since she’d let the office know she’d been released from the hospital. She didn’t want to see how much work she had piled up.

Dog looked up when she came out. “Love the skin, baby, but you need more cover on my bike.”

Charley smirked. “I don’t own a biker-babe leather jacket, Dog. Plus, it’s going to be in the nineties today.”

He studied her a moment before he spoke, a warm look in his eyes. “You stick around Edwards, we’re going to get you one of those jackets.”

Her chest squeezed.Stick around Edwards. What she wouldn’t give to do just that, but she couldn’t run her firm from up here. She’d have to sell it, and the thought of doing that gutted her, like losing Daddy all over again.

But she liked that he was thinking about the future. Some way, somehow, she wanted him in her life. She didn’t know how she’d manage it with all she had to do, but there must be a way.

In front of the closet, she dropped to her knees and pulled out a sexy pair of wedge sandals that made her butt look fabulous in the jeans. “Well, for now we have to make do.”

Dog shook his head. He wasn’t looking at her butt, but at what was in her hands.

“What?”

“Don’t you have some boots? I let you ride in those heels last night because we had no choice, but trust me, those shoes will not work on my bike.”

Charley tossed the sandals back into the closet and rooted around in the back. She found what she was looking for. “Fine. I’ll wear these ugly sneakers. I only have them here for when I garden.”

He frowned. “Guess they’ll do. I’m adding boots to that shopping list.”

She flashed him a huge grin as she slipped on the dirty shoes. “I love shopping.”

“I don’t. You ‘bout ready?”

She pulled the last tie tight. “Yep.”

He rose from the bed and extended his hand. She took it, and he pulled her up, straight into his chest. He wrapped her in his arms and kissed her hard. She tasted French vanilla on his tongue and pulled closer to get more. Coffee had never tasted so good.
