‘Got what?’

‘The Dress!’

‘Great—can they make it from start to finish this morning?’

Mel looked aghast and then almost instantly relieved again.‘Sample.They’ll have a sample. We’ll just pay through the nose for it.Or you will.Offer to.It’ll be fine.’

‘Mel, I won’t fit a sample, it’ll be made for skinny people.’

‘It can be adjusted.’

Amazingly Mel was right—about everything. She called the designer as soon as she got the number off directory—yes there was a sample, yes, they could purchase it, yes, it could be adjusted on the spot. And when, a little under an hour later, Cally stood in front of the mirror she saw that Mel had been right about the style too.

‘It’s not too Jane Austen?’As the seamstress made adjustments Cally frowned at Mel.

‘You can never be too Jane Austen.’

The empire line dusky pink dress was pretty and perfect and made the most of her cleavage.

‘The colour complements your skin tone.’

The adjustments were minor; fortunately they’d had samples in several sizes—including Cally’s.

‘That was amazingly easy,’ Cally breathed as they walked out of the exclusive boutique.‘And with hours to spare.’

Mel looked at her as if she were loony.‘Are you kidding? We’ve barely started.’She stashed the box safely in the boot and marched her on, on a mission.

‘Are you in love with him?’

‘Blake?’

‘No.The car-park attendant.Yes Blake. This guy you’re suddenly marrying.’Mel gave her a sideways look.‘I knew things were hot between you—that was obvious at the auction. But this is really sudden, isn’t it?’

Cally smiled.‘Blake isn’t one to sit idle.Once he’s made up his mind...’

‘And the same can be said for you.’

‘I guess.Blake and I are both used to getting what we want.’

‘And what’s that?’

‘Our baby.’

‘What’s he like?’

‘The baby?Mel, we don’t even know if it’s a “he” yet—it’s too early!’

‘I don’t mean the baby.I mean Blake.What’shelike?’

‘Honest to a fault.Clever.In control.Funny.Strong—’

‘And incredibly sexy.’

‘That too.’

‘Cally.I don’t want to burst your bubble or anything. But you hardly know this guy.’

‘There’s no bubble to burst, Mel.’She grinned and hid the little wince.‘What we have is a partnership.’
