“Who makes your eyes light up and your heart beat faster.”

“Fuck you, Troy.” She grins and I tease her some more.

“So, what’s his name and should he be certified? Perhaps he already is.”

“Wouldn’t you like to know?” She winks and says with a wicked smile. “Anyway, I’m off to bed. I have a busy day tomorrow.”

“Goodnight sis.”

I watch her leave the room, gripping her phone tightly and I wonder about the man who has put a smile on her face. She’s an attractive woman, worth millions, and it concerns me that she’s also prey for any money grabbing bastard out there.

Whoever this man is will now add his name to my investigator’s list because I will protect my sister, even if she hates me for it.

CHAPTER 23

LAURA

Ihave never been more relieved to get home in my life. After the day I’ve had, I want to head straight to bed after a quick meal in front of the television.

On the journey home, my attention was focused solely on Oscar Callahan. I can’t believe I wasted so many emotions on a man I am ambivalent toward now. I’m not sure what I’ll do if he does call me tomorrow. Will I go on a date with him? I really need to sound this out with my friends, but I don’t trust myself to speak to any of them right now. They will have many questions and are probably tired of my banal responses to their messages in our What’s App group.

When I push though my front door, I am both physically and mentally exhausted and when I flick the light switch, I almost have a heart attack when I see the man waiting for me in the darkness.

“You’re late.”

He raises his eyes and I gasp, “Fuck me, Adonis, I thought you were a murderer.”

“I am.”

He grins to make light of his words and I stare at him in horror as his wicked eyes flash and he shrugs.

“I’m not pretending to be anything else, Laura. I told you what I am but, in your case, I’m your guardian angel and it’s more than my life’s worth to mess with your family.”

“My family.” My voice shakes as I face up to something I’ve tried not to think about.

“Do they know you’re here?”

“Of course.”

I drop onto my couch and pull my legs underneath me, and stare at him with curiosity. “Why don’t they come themselves?”

“Because they don’t want to alert Troy, who is probably having them followed.”

“Why not?” This is all a little hysterical if you ask me, and I’m struggling to understand the cloak and dagger stuff.

Adonis stares at me hard and I wonder how many people before me have been the focus of his dark attention. It makes me shiver knowing that he ends people’s lives. I can’t imagine what that must feel like, and the world they live in scares the shit out of me. Then again, I only have his word for that.

I’m curious though and listen for an explanation and Adonis leans back and smiles softly. “Your grandfather is a very powerful man. He has many enemies and not many actual friends. My father is his oldest one and they would kill for one another.”

“Why does it always involve killing people with you?”

I roll my eyes as he chuckles softly, “It doesn’t always involve killing people, Laura. I have other talents.”

Fuck me, is it hot in here? I am burning up because it hasn’t escaped my attention that this man is seriously hot, and the danger only adds another intoxicating layer of excitement.

I am fascinated by this man. His dark good looks and penetrating eyes are accompanied by olive skin that is decorated with tribal looking ink. He wears the dark stubble on his jaw well and his muscles appear on a mission to overtake his bodyand yet there is something about him that screams protector, not murderer.

I suppose it’s the way he regards me with those gentle eyes that can sharpen in an instant. His soft smile that holds a wicked edge captivates me and the way he moves reminds me of a panther waiting for the opportune moment to strike.
