“He . . . ” I bit my lip. “Just texted me that I was a good girl 'cause I wasn't late.”

Alana’s eyes widened as her mouth formed ano. Her hand covered her mouth as she tried to hide a smile. “I see. I think there were more hints dotted around than you’re telling me.”

I glared at her. “Shut up.”

Alana laughed harder. “Maybe he needs to get hired here to whip you into shape,” she said.

“You are acting like I am the worst. I am?—”

“You're not,” she said. The mirth vanished as she shifted on her feet. “But I came here to warn you that Jessica and Kate were near HR earlier. They are trying to get on Caleb’s good side. Beware.”

Rolling my eyes, I tried to hide my annoyance. In a comical attempt to rest my head on my hands, I waved my arms around, knocking my keyboard onto the floor along with a cup full of pens. With a sigh, I got on my knees and started cleaning it up just as a group of people approached from down the hall. I stopped in my tracks as I reached for my pens. It looked to be about three women and a couple of men in the hall. All I could see were legs. A pair of expensive heels with a red bottom and a pair of generic heels on another woman. My guess was Kate and Jessica Dumas. A few suits with men’s shoes.

A deep voice that seemed familiar spoke first. “Ms. Crews, we don't pay you to chat.” That would have to be Caleb, because I would recognize anyone else in this building. Maybe his voice was similar to his dad's.

“I was getting a copy off the printer, of course,” she said with a snide retort. She walked to the printer and picked up a sheet of paper. I smiled. It was our little secret. Alana did that often as an excuse to chat. She stepped out and went down the hall. The two men walked down, but the expensive-heeled lady walked away. I internally groaned. The cheap heels belonged to Kate. I continued to pick up my pencils.

“Jordan, are you here?” she asked, annoyance laced in every word. I pursed my lips. I grabbed the last pencil, slammed the keyboard back up, and stood up with a fake smile.

“Yeah, I’m here. How can I help you?”

Kate narrowed her eyes. “Look, the board will be here for the next week and Jessica will be here a bit longer to see the transfer through. You have to be on your best behavior.”

“You're acting like I’m a petulant child. I do my job. I’m only late when I’m getting you coffee,” I said. “The other day was an outlier.”

“Jessica Dumas and I have big plans for this company. We don't want you to hold us back.”

I made a face. Kate had always had plans to climb the corporate ladder. Was Caleb starting her key to a promotion?

“Kate, you are acting crazy. I’m not going to be the one preventing you from getting a raise. Remember the chain of command. You’re only slightly above me. I don’t know how you think you’re going to climb the corporate ladder from this low spot anyways.”

One side of her mouth perked up. “You don't understand. Jessica and I have big plans. I won't always be an assistant. Now stop fucking up.”

I sat down in my chair and started opening my emails. “Yeah, you betcha. Good luck with that,” I said.

Kate walked out to find the others. I pulled my phone back out. There was a text from Cal. I sighed. At least this potential relationship wasn’t as bad as work was right now.

Cal

This is boring.

Me

Me? or work?

Cal

Work. I don’t think you could be boring. There are so many ways I can use you.

Me

Agree.

I bit my lip as my face warmed. What things was he thinking about? I put my phone down and hit print on all the files that were sent to me. After that, I pulled up the number to the local print shop to pick up an order.

Cal

I guess all offices are the same.
