me

yeah. Sorry to disappoint.

Cal

At least I have you.

Me

oh, you have me?

Cal

There is no one else that I want. That ass is mine.

I bit my bottom lip as I tried to suppress my smile. It had been so long since I had flirted with a guy I genuinely liked. Grabbing a stack of papers, I got up and started walking through the halls. As I passed, I carefully avoided the noisy chatter of the small packs of people milling around the office.

That was how I survived. Do my work, avoid as many people as possible, avoid the drama, keep my head down, and leave work at work. It was simple and easy. Much easier compared to all my old jobs. Even though I did all the dirty jobs aroundthe office, it was acceptable. This worked well for me. The only person that noticed me was my boss, Kate. Kate was one of the higher level assistants, but she had eyes on the top of the company. Normally, I would support people with high ambitions, but Kate always treated me nastily. Mostly, I did half of Kate's work, like copies, passing the mail, cleaning the break room, and getting any larger orders from the print company while she did her own thing. Plotting and biding her time till she could get to a better position.

As I walked the halls, I could hear snippets of conversations.

“He is an ass. Always on his phone. Did you hear that he threw Mandy out of his office the other day?” a woman said to the person she was standing beside.

“He threatened to go to HR about it when I hit on him! How dare he!”

I snickered as I walked past. Shouldn’t they be happy he wasn’t a lech like others?Mandy was the one that was primping before the end of the day yesterday. I wonder how long it would take for things to go back to normal. How many people would he reject? The few things I had heard about him weren’t the nicest.

As I finished my circle around the office, I grabbed my stuff to go to the specialty printers. When I stepped outside, I took in a deep breath of fresh air. I pulled out my phone and sent a selfie to Cal, capturing the majestic tree in the background..

Me

I escaped the insanity.

Cal

Jealous.

Me

I can grab a quick cup of coffee and bring it to you if you want. If you tell me where you work?

Cal

No. If anyone needs to do anything, I think I need to cook you dinner. I haven't furnished my place yet. Yours? Tonight?

Me

you probably should work on getting stuff for your place.

Cal

This weekend? Want to help me out? I still want to cook you dinner tonight.

Me

what's for dinner then? Is there dessert?

Cal
