You.

I swallowed as I read the text. How could this unbelievably attractive man want me? Growing up, so many people would ghost me or tease me about dating. Cal was completely out of my league.

Chapter 6

Cal

“Are you listening to me, Caleb?”

I slipped my phone back into my pocket. “Yes, absolutely,” I said.

My dad started to explain more about which clients were our top clients. Jessica Dumas, one of the higher-up members of our board, was sitting beside me. She cleared her throat.

“Where do you think we should go, Caleb?” she asked. It was a trap. I could see it in the small smirk on her face.

I shrugged. “I think our tech side is lacking. We could have a whole division dedicated to social media which would help us out more,” I said. The more I had been looking through all the files, the more I realized the company was working in the past as far as marketing was concerned. How were they able to fight things like VidVid and all the other social media programs?

Jessica leaned back in her chair. Her perfectly manicured nails were tapping the side of the chair. “I am not sure if?—”

“Technology is our future. You are vastly mistaken if you don't think we should,” I said with an eye-roll. “To think you are a part of the board helping guide this company.”

Her jaw steeled. “What do you know? You have been gone for over ten years,” she hissed.

I shrugged. “You're choosing not to believe me.”

What she didn't know was I had been making smart investments into tech companies for the last few years. I spent the last ten years backing promising apps with a college friend. He handled the tech, I handled everything else. Or I hired the contractors for it. I was currently the co-owner of a small but lucrative tech company. I didn't need to be in this company. I was here for Dad. I was successful in business already except we always told the media that the company was a few “aloof tech geeks that didn’t want the publicity.” Why didn't I feel as confident here? Was it the looming idea that I would be replacing my dad, which meant his inevitable death? Was this not my passion?

Kate huffed as she crossed her arms. My dad frowned as he looked between us. “We'll continue this later,” he said as he started to pack up all the files.

Kate and I stepped into the hall together. “How has your coffee been? I pulled some strings to get you some every morning.”

That explained it. It was a trap. There was no way the nice notes were coming from Kate. “Thanks,” I muttered as I walked back to my office. The clicking of her heels echoed behind me.

“You have some big shoes to fill, ya know.”

“Thanks for the reminder,” I said as I slammed my door shut. There was a pile of work on my desk and a muffin. The same handwriting from this morning:

Live. Laugh. Muffins.

Or whatever. My phone rang as I slipped the note with the others. The handwriting was similar to the last note. Later I would figure out who is trying to get on my good side. I would have to remind them that I would go to HR to prevent anyone from saying I was using my position for easy pussy. My phone showed my partner's face, Brian.

“Cal.”

“Hey. How’s the small town?”

“It's not that small. But ya know. No one thinks I can do this. No one’s listening.”

“Did you tell them about our business?”

“No.”

He groaned. “So you got into business with me to prove them wrong. Except you won't tell them that you have been successful without daddy dearest?”

“Yeah.”

“Cal, I don't get you. Whatever. Anything else interesting?”

“I met a girl.”
