“What did you talk about at lunch? I saw you stayed there longer than just to deliver his lunch.”

My cheeks grew warm. I had to change the subject; I didn’t want her to find out. That information would be terrible in her hands. The doors opened up, and we walked out into the hall. “We talked about nothing of importance.”

“Maybe we need to work that out. We should craft a list of things you need to ask him and report to me.”

“Why should I do that?” I asked.

Kate stopped in her tracks and glared at me. “Keep up, Jordan.”

“I’m keeping up. I’m fetching coffees, hunting down people for signatures. By the way, why hasn’t this place started using e-signatures? I pass out copies, I go get brochures and god knows what I do for everyone in the office andyou.” I stepped away from Kate as I handed a woman her folders. Thankfully, she had the bulk of this pile. I sighed as the weight became lighter. I walked back to Kate, who was now arguing with Jessica.

Jessica stepped in front of me. “What did you talk about with Caleb the other day?” she hissed.

“I told Kate we didn’t talk about anything crazy. Nothing that will help you do whatever weirdness you are planning.”

Jessica rolled her eyes. “You are worthless.”

I pursed my lips. A spark of hurt bloomed inside me, but she was wrong. I turned and started walking. “No, I’m not.”

I drifted to the next cubicle, where I passed over a few papers and received a few envelopes to be mailed. Kate and Jessica were feet away from me as I walked to each cubicle. After I passed a few pieces of mail, I saw Jessica turn on her Louboutin heels and storm down the hall. Kate hurried back to me.

“So, it seems that Caleb is already fucking up. He missed a few papers he needed to turn in. We just need to help push it further. He’s just like he was as a kid.”

I bit my bottom lip. Maybe I needed to investigate what they were talking about. I never paid much attention to the rumors. I knew he was a playboy, but what good looking kid with money isn’t? When we had that date, he mentioned he sought out trouble for a few years.

“Why? What’s the point? Doesn’t he need to take his dad’s position?” I said. “I don’t even understand why they put him there. Why did they put him in that position?”

Kate rolled her eyes dramatically as we walked again. “And wouldn’t it be best if it was someone we were close with . . . like Jessica?”

She wasn’t listening to me at all. She was plotting something and I had a bad feeling she was going to usemeas her pawn. I tilted my head. “No,youare close to Jessica, not me,” I said. “I don’t benefit from this at all.”

“Same difference.”

I blew out a breath in frustration. Kate rambled on about having a boss with a plan. My eyes drifted to Alana’s office. I saw a suit sitting in the chair. My eyes traveled to the person’s head and I realized it was a man with a blond man bun. Damn, Cal was in Alana’s office. Why? I wondered if Alana would tell me later. I really hoped he wasn’t mentioning anything about Tyler. He’d gotten girls fired in the past. Worry coursed through me as I nodded absentmindedly while Kate droned on and on.

Chapter 15

Cal

Today’s note:

Fuck you.

My thumb hovered over Jordan’s text chain. She was still mad. We hadn’t texted in days. I hadn’t seen her sincethatlunch. It wasn’t even about the sex. I just wantedher.I missed her.

“Cal, you missed turning in those requisition papers,” my father said.

I looked up from my phone. “What papers?”

My father pursed his lips. “The one we needed to fill out for our client.”

“Email it to me and I will finish it,” I said.

Jessica snorted loudly. Everywhere I went, she was there. Always making snide comments. She smirked as she tucked her red hair behind her ear.

My father looked over his glasses in disdain. He glanced at Jessica. She waved one of her hands. Dad nodded. “You need an assistant,” he said as he turned his attention back to me. Jessica made a face like that wasn’t the reaction she expected. I tried to hide my smirk.

“You’re assuming that would have helped,” I said. “Even an assistant is human.”
