“Yeah, no one will be emailing you to do their work or to humiliate you.” He shifted the box into one hand as he slipped his hand into his pocket. He started to text something. I turned toward Alana. My purse dinged.

“Is this true?”

Alana nodded. I pulled my phone out of my bag. My phone glowed with Cal’s name on the screen. I lifted my head to glare at him. He smirked again as he lifted his brows. I huffed and tapped the screen to see the message.

Cal

Unless you like to be humiliated. If so, I volunteer with pleasure.

I swallowed and shoved my phone back into my bag.

“Yes. But the good news is that you will get a raise,” Alana said in that cheery voice of hers. The one she used when someone was being difficult. That someone was me.

I blinked as I scowled again. “I better be getting a raise since that position is on a different pay scale.”

“It’s even better than that. You’re getting a raise on top of that though. I worked it out,” she said as she glanced at Caleb.

“You deserve a raise no matter what,” Cal said smoothly.

I stomped. “Of course I do! I know I work harder than Kate,”I said.

“I know. I know. I could have tried to pull things around,” Alana said.

“No, you couldn’t. You know Kate wouldn’t have allowed it. How many times has she written me up and you’ve ‘lost’ the write-ups?”

Alana frowned. “You’ve deserved a raise and a promotion for a long time. This is for the best,” she said calmly. She shifted on her feet, her fingers readjusting as she was holding the coffees.

“Who moved my stuff?” I demanded.

Alana’s face fell. “I thought you did?” She winced as she realized if I had moved my stuff, then I wouldn’t be so angry.

Cal shrugged. “I was here late. I wanted to help you out. It’s not like I had a date or anything.”

“What idiot would date you?” I hissed. “Don’t touch my stuff again.”

He smirked again. He fiddled with his phone as he seemed to be considering a text. “I know you had a hard day yesterday. I saw Kate running you ragged. Now all the work you will be doing will be yours. Not yoursandKate’s.Plus, you only need to get coffee for you and me. Andourlunch. Someone recently told me that I needed someone to help me out. You seem to be the best person for the job.”

Alana stepped backward. “Well, I have bad news to share with Kate. So, bye. I suggest laying low for a while,” she said as she turned to head to the elevators.

I stood and glared at Cal. “Stop throwing my words back at me.”

He shrugged. “You said them.”

I glared at the desk. “I guess I need to set all this up. Leave me alone.”

“I won’t bother you today. Get settled.” Cal turned and walked into his office. I stood and glared at the mess of a desk. Although, this was a nicer computer than the one I had been using. I gently dragged my fingers along the sides of the monitor. I guessed it was time to get settled.

After getting home, I walked into my kitchen, setting my Chinese food on the counter. I started to unlace my chucks and put them on my small shoe rack. I could hear my phone beeping in my purse. I grabbed my phone with one hand as I grabbed an egg roll with the other. I tore a chunk off of it as I walked to my bedroom to get into my pajamas.

There was a text from Cal.

Cal

Answer the door.

I rolled my eyes as I walked back to the door. There he was. The handsome man himself. I sucked a deep breath in and sighed.

“What do you want? I don’t think most bosses know where their assistants live,” I said as I crossed my arms.
