Chapter 17

Cal

Jerk.

That’s what today's note said. I mean, was I more mad at myself? If it wasn’t for that damn phone call, I probably would have let him cash in on those promises. I hated how he made me feel. I didn’t really want him to be my boss. But I got two raises out of this. I went to my desk and sipped my coffee as my computer booted up. I heard footsteps coming down the hallway and my eyes drifted down the hall.

There he was. His dark blue suit fit his body perfectly. Cal saw me looking at him as he walked over with a smirk. “Can you come in and help me with a few things?” he asked.

I shrugged. “I guess that’s my job.”

Cal chuckled as he walked into his office. He grabbed the note, laughed, and threw it down. “Did you spit in this?”

I rolled my eyes and put my hand on my hips. “Why would you think that?”

“Your notes aren’t bright and cheery. But hopefully, I can change your mind on that,” he said. “This is the problem. I can’t edit this document.” He pulled up a document on his computer. I stood behind him, sipping my coffee. Today was a hot coffee day. Maybe the smell of this coffee would distract me from how nice he smelled. Whatever his soap was, it was divine. I wanted the days back where I could cuddle with him. Or straddle his lap and make out.

I pointed to the icon down below. “You can’t edit it. Print it out and you’ll have to fill it out. Who’s the sender? Pruitt?” I said.

“Yeah, Pruitt.”

“They don’t like e-signatures or anything like that. Print, fill out, and I will take it to them.”

“Fine. Can you get it?” Cal said as he hit print.

“Yeah, gotta get my steps in, I guess,” I said as I walked out the door. As I got to the copy room, a hand grabbed my shoulder. I yelped as I turned. It was Kate.

She rolled her eyes dramatically. “I was wondering how long it would take for him to send you down here.”

“Look, Kate, I’m sorry he took me from you. It wasn’t my choice and you can’t say no to the boss’ son,” I said. I turned to the machine and grabbed the copy.

She lifted one shoulder as she steeled her jaw. “I will manage just fine for a few weeks. This will work out better for us, anyway.”

“What do you mean?” I asked. Did I really want to know what she was plotting? Not really. Maybe I need to clarify that I don’t want to be involved. “Look, I don’t want to be involved in any of your petty drama. You know me. Nose to the grindstone and all.”

Kate’s eyes narrowed, and she pursed her lips. “Fine. Keep me up to date. If he makes any untoward advances toward you, you tell me. I’ll kick him in the rear,” she said. Her pointer finger was wildly flying at that remark.

My eyebrows furrowed. Kate had never defended me. In the last few weeks, she never stopped Tyler from making lascivious remarks toward me. I know she witnessed one event. Why would she care now?

I nodded. “Sure, I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for being my boss and teaching me how to do the job. I’m sure he saw how well you work and he felt that maybe he could have a Kate 2.0 in me,” I said. I was lying through my teeth. Kate smiled as I finished my thanks. It was the exact thing she loved to hear.

“Not everyone can be as good as me,” she said. “Well, got to go. Things to do now that you are gone.” Kate turned and walked down the hall. Nothing about my position with Kate had been normal. Her desk was upstairs, and I was down here. Sometimes I thought it was on purpose. If the CEO didn’t realize how much work she didn’t do, he wouldn’t have a cause to fire her.

The printer groaned again. I turned and stared at the paper, waiting for it to roll out. I grabbed it to see if Cal sent something else. My eyes widened, and I looked around. Cal had printed something else. It read:Did you get lost? Or did you remember what happened there last week?

My heart raced. This was too risky. Why did he do that? What if someone had found it? I huffed and walked back to Cal’s office. After pulling the door open, I walked in. I slammed the door loudly.

“Hey, I got it. Sorry it was so late,” I said. “But you shouldn’t have sent this!”

Cal looked up from the computer, and a mischievous smile crossed his face. “You were taking an excessive amount of time back there. I didn’t know if you were remembering the start of a glorious afternoon.”

I crumpled it up and threw it in the wastebasket. “We really shouldn’t talk about this ever again.”

“You can. I won’t. I want more,” he said. His eyes darkened as he looked at me. My breath caught as I swallowed.

“You say that like it is so simple. Things are complicated now.”

“It is. I like you. You might like me? I know you were wet as hell the other day. And the time before that,” he said. “I bet your pussy gets wet whenever you think about it.”
