“Pretty much. You know it looks bad. It’s what they all said you would do.”

I frowned as I walked past her. “Do you need dinner?” I asked.

“You can’t always be giving me dinner and lunch all the time,” she said as she followed me.

“I want to take care of you,” I said. “If that means making sure you have a pleasant lunch or dinner . . .”

“It’s going to look weird that you have come here multiple times.”

“You’re my assistant. There are bosses out there that require way more than me.”

Jordan huffed as she sat on her couch and crossed her arms. I pulled out my phone. “I can order something for you or cook?”

She looked up, smiled and blinked. “Cook for me. This time you don’t have groceries you brought over and your own pots and pans.”

I chuckled as I walked back to her kitchen. “You wound me. Do you think I am that inept?”

I saw her head bounce from my vantage point. “How are you adjusting? I know before we knew who we were, you were . . . worried.”

“I was strong-armed into getting my assistant.”

She got on her knees and twisted around on the couch. Her head was barely above the bar. “You’re the son of the CEO. They expect you to take the company one day. Not having an assistant was foolish and unprofessional. They did the right thing. Then again, you like making stupid mistakes. Like not having an assistant for your other business. You’re really lucky.”

“The only thing in my life that isn’t a mistake is you,” I said.

Jordan stilled and her plump lips parted. “Cal, I am a mistake.”

“Never. Every moment with you I treasure,” I said as I pulled ingredients out of the fridge. “What were you planning on cooking?”

She shrugged. “I’ve been getting a lot of take out lately.”

“You just said I was being foolish, but here you are not taking care of yourself.”

“It’s not like I’ve been skipping meals! I eat.” She pinched her stomach and I guess she squeezed it. I couldn’t see it, but I had seen her do it before. “What are you making?”

I winked. “It’s a surprise.”

She stuck her tongue out at me. I turned as I chuckled. I dipped the bread in the egg mixture.

Jordan groaned as she threw her arms up in the air. “You better not be making something fancy. I don’t think my uncultured body can take fancy stuff.”

“I guess we’ll get some culture in you,” I said. I turned and winked. Her eyes widened slightly. “I would love to get something else in you.”

Jordan groaned and threw herself on the couch. “You’re a pervert,” she screamed into the cushions.

I laughed. I continued to flip and cook the bread. “You may have to say that louder. The couch was in your way.”

There was rustling behind me. “Things could have been different, ya know.”

“It doesn’t have to be different.”

“You know it does. It all changed when you started working there.”

“We had a relationship before I started working there. That’s okay according to the manual. I wouldn’t even be in this town if it wasn’t for this job.”

Jordan groaned. I pulled out some strawberries from the fridge and chopped them up. “Are you almost done?” she said. “I might be hungry.”

I put the plates on the bar. “Yeah, it’s done.”
