Cal

Don’t fucking tease me like that or I’ll have to show you what happens to naughty girls. I’m trying to work.

Me

Fine.

A man walked in front of me and I slammed the tablet shut. I placed it on the table in front of me. He was rather handsome. Faintly familiar, like I saw him across the room once upon a time. Dark hair and a nice suit.

“Are you Jaime?” I could have sworn the application said that Jaime was a woman.

“No, James is getting me coffee.”

My brows furrowed as I looked up from my papers. It clearly said female. I stood up and sat at the table beside the couch. This was more professional for an interview. “James?”

He sat at the table, too. “It's all on her actual papers. I guess she is going by Jaime. Her dad was weird. Like that song?”

I pursed my lips. “Why isn't James here, then?”

“I need you to hire her,” he demanded.

My mouth fell open. “Excuse me? You are not my boss.”

“I know who you are working for and I need you to hire James.”

“I am hiring on merit. What doyou know?” Who the fuck did this guy think he was?

“James is an excellent candidate. You could not get a better . . . virtual assistant with the chance of becoming an assistant?”

“Yes.”

“You need her. She is highly competitive and competent.”

“I . . .”

“I need Brian here,” he said as he leaned forward with his hands in the shape of a pyramid.

My eyes widened as I realized who this was. My eyes traced the edges of his expensive tie. The place we went to was very exclusive and anyone Brian had fucked there was just as rich as Cal. This had to be the guy he fucked. “Oh, you were the date from a few weeks ago?”

“Yeah. But do me a favor, have all her paperwork as James. It is her legal name.”

“I don't take orders from you. I’m assuming you’re rich because you were at that restaurant, but money doesn't mean I follow your orders.”

“I recognized the guy that was fingering you at the table. You must have a thing for taking orders. He’s a known playboy. Would be easy to drop a hint to a tabloid.”

The blood drained from my face as I swallowed. I had hoped no one had noticed what Cal had done. Here someone was threatening to take it to the tabloids. “He’s not a playboy anymore. You were the guy that Brian went with?”

He shrugged. “Yes. Now I want you to hire James and work as much magic as you can to get him here. The distance is okay. But I want him here.” His eyes looked past me as he seemed to be looking for Jaime.

“I’m already doing my best. I’m overworked and overwhelmed. Too many fires to deal with.”

He laughed as another woman walked over. She was wearing a sweater that didn’t seem appropriate for the season and black clothing. Was she covering up tattoos? It was too hot to be wearing that. She had a nose ring in her nose and her hair was loose around her shoulders.

With an attitude and a cock of her hip, the woman said, “Your coffee, sir.”

He sucked in a deep breath and reached out for the coffee.

He turned back toward me. Did he even tell me his name? I’ll get it from Brian, eventually. “It was nice talking to you,Cal’s assistant.”
