Page 7 of Hitting the Boss

I put my hands up. “Love? It's too early for that conversation. But God, he is so hot.” My shoulders slumped as I sighed.

Alana laughed as she stood up. “I should get going. You be safe and use protection.”

“Alana!”

“That’s how I got my kid! So wrap up!”

I groaned.

Alana cackled before stepping toward the doorway. She waved. “I’ve got to go say hi to the baby boss. Bye!” Her laughing echoed as she walked down the quiet hall.

When the day was over, I started to pack up my belongings. As I walked to the doors, faintly I heard a crash from the back as a man roared, “Get out of my office!” It wasn't a voice I recognized. It must be Caleb. I rolled my eyes. As I walked out of the office, I gave a middle finger to the portrait in the lobby picturing the teenage boy who looked like he fell from a boy band. I had heard the stories. He would be the quintessential born-into-money-type of boss. Not for me at all.

Chapter 4

Jordan

At home, I dug in my dryer for some clean pajamas. Baggy sweatpants and a T-shirt. I curled up on the couch to watch some shows while I waited. I tried to ignore the fact that an unbelievably gorgeous person was coming tomyapartment to see me. Anxiety kept bubbling up as I would absently start turning my phone back on to turn it off again. No new flirty texts from him. Maybe this is a prank?

There was a knock on the door. I sighed. Finally, I walked to the door and opened it to see Cal was standing there wearing a hoodie and jeans. His long hair was splayed around his shoulders. There was a kink in the middle like he had it up today. I smiled and bit my lip. He smiled as he lifted a bag of food.

“You actually came?”

“Of course I did,” he said.

I stepped to the side and he walked toward the kitchen. The kitchen was small, with no room for a table, but had a bar that separated the kitchen from the living area. He set it down on the bar and looked around. Was he judging my apartment? “Is this where you eat?”

“Yep. Do you want some water? I don't really have much here other than coffee,” I said as I started to reach into the cabinet for the glasses on the top shelf. All of a sudden, he was behind me.

“Let me get it for you,” he whispered as he stilled my arm. Need coursed through my body. He didn't move away from me. My breath stilled as he grabbed two cups. He shifted closer to me and we were pressed tight together before he stepped away. I turned as he filled up the cups. He relaxed against the fridge as he looked at me. His eyes twinkled as he smirked. I walked to the stool and sat down.Deep breaths. Deep breaths.

“You didn't answer my question today.”

I blinked. “What do you mean? Which one?” I mentally started to retrace our conversation throughout the day.

As he sat down beside me, he leaned closer to me. “Did you wear underwear today?”

I felt the warmth creep up my face. “Well, I was late for work. So, obviously, yes. I did. I tried to wear nice heels to make up for it. Now I regret that.” I did a quick shift on my feet to make the point.

“That's too bad. I was imagining you without panties all day thinking about me,” he said with a wink.

I laughed. “You are a bit too full of yourself there, boss,” I said.

“Tell me about your day. Mine was dreadful. A lot of women are trying to flirt with me all day. Fresh meat? Using me for connections?”

I shrugged. “I missed some important stuff, but they sent me for coffee on the way. I walked to the copy machine a ton today. There was some drama at one point,” I said.

He shook his head. All of his mirth disappeared when we talked about work. “It will change in a few weeks. Most will figure out the lay of the land after a few weeks,” he said. Hestarted to lay out countless Chinese cardboard containers. “So after we eat, what are we watching?”

“This old sci-fi show. I am trying to catch up on quality sci-fi. Or at least I’ve heard it’s quality. This one is kinda weird and kooky. I remember watching it as a kid and not understanding it,” I said. “How much food did you bring?”

He chuckled. “I skipped lunch today.”

I leaned closer to him. “Sounds like you need better assistants. You need your own coffee girl, like me.”

He bit his lip again as he looked at my lips. “Ah, but if we worked together, we couldn't date though. Most companies have anti-fraternization policies.”

I waved a hand as I grabbed a fork and a container. “I have been doing this long enough. Most people don't care. Even at my other jobs. The bigwigs don’t care unless it gets the company in trouble. When I worked at the daycare, it was the only time I did not hear of anything going on.”
