“You worked at a daycare?”

I nodded with my mouth full of rice. “Yeah, but this pays way more. I don't really know what I want to do with the rest of my life. I’m willing to stay in my position till I figure it out. I may not be wearing heels for it, though,” I said. I pursed my lips. “I know that makes me sound flighty but this pays so well. Anything I excel at is more of a caregiving role. They don't pay enough.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. It might vary between facilities. But getting jobs at the well-paying ones is hard. I tried for a while! I’ll just stay where I am for now.”

Cal's brows were furrowed as he was watching me. “Yeah, I never thought of that. Even when I did odd jobs the last few years, I never really thought of it.”

“Even if I had talents within an office, I don’t have a chance to use them. The office I work at has the best salaries around.Which means I take the abuse. I make the copies, deliver the mail, and do pretty much everything everyone else doesn’t want to do.”

“Why don’t you do more?”

I made a face. “I think I was hired to do all the bad stuff that the person above me doesn’t want to do. Honestly, I don’t know what she does all day. I do all the boring stuff.”

He chuckled.

“I would say you should get out more, but I guess you are more traveled than me. Did you couch surf for all those years you traveled? Even menial pay doesn't matter much if you got a roof over your head.”

He paused, looking away. “Yeah, did that.”

“Well, in the real world, not everyone is able to bounce couch to couch. We have to worry about food and somewhere to live. So, here I am fetching coffee for good pay. Maybe one day I will find a job that I love.”

He smiled gently. “Hobbies?”

“Hmmm,” I twirled noodles on my fork. “Like, you know I am trying to learn poi. I like to watch TV, mostly science fiction. I dabble in random crafts. Jack of some trades but master of none. If I was any good, I could sell that on the side. But what does it say about society or culture if fun things have to be a job?”

He nodded. “So you seem more creative than analytical?”

I nodded. “You betcha. The nice thing about the job I have is that I can just let my mind wander through the day.”

“Or text me half the day.”

“I’m not sure about you, but I did my job today. But I heard you were distracted by the state of my panties all day,” I said. I giggled as my face warmed up.

Cal chuckled. “I would love to be distracted by more than the thought of your panties.”

I stood up and started to put my leftovers in the fridge. “I think I am done eating now. It's TV time. Are you ready?”

His blue eyes twinkled as he smirked. “I’m always ready, my dear.”

I laughed and patted his shoulder. “Get your mind out of the gutter. Couch now.”

He grabbed the side of my waist as I passed him and pulled me closer to him. His hard body pressed against my much softer one. He tilted his head closer to mine. “I thought I was supposed to be the bossy one,” he whispered. His lips were inches from mine. I could feel his hot breath on me.

Warmth spread across my cheeks. Is he going to kiss me now? A smile crept on his lips and he grabbed me behind the knees. He pulled me close, carrying me bridal-style toward the couch. “I'm too heavy!” I shrieked.

He chuckled. “Not that heavy,” he grunted as he sat on the couch. My legs were now draped on his legs. “You said your feet hurt earlier? How ’bout I massage them, you watch, and we can talk more?”

I shrugged and tried to relax on the couch as he started to massage my feet. I started to flick through the channels to choose the show I wanted to watch. With butterflies bouncing in my stomach, I started to babble. The easiest thing to chat about was explain the show. He didn’t seem like a sci-fi guy and he’s probably never heard of this show. “So, the ship is like a living bug thing.”

He nodded and smirked. “Hmm.”

My finger hovered over the play button. He didn’t care. “Tell me about you though. You obviously come from some money but worked a bit when you could. Now you are back?”

“Yeah, I left a decade ago. Been traveling, couch surfing like you said, and stuff. I tried to lay low though and hoped people would forget about me.”

“Did that work out?”
