“You haven’t denied fucking her.”

“I did everything by the books. Ask Alana. I filled out the relationship form weeks ago. The moment I realized Jordan worked here, I filled that form out and sent it to her. We were dating before I started working here or before I was her boss. I dideverythingby the books.”

“Why didn’t Alana tell us earlier?” Jessica asked with her hands on her hips.

“Did you tell her about this plan? I see she’s not here. You also had Mr. Lyons’ hand around just to see what would happen. He’s been harassing everyone here. Jessica has been trying tosabotage me for weeks and that’s why she wants Jordan fired. That’s why they stole her phone out of her desk. No one cares that they have done this?” I said.

“We have to get rid of the filth, considering everyone will watch us because of these accusations. We can’t have you two doing this.”

“What about me?” I asked.

“What about you?” my father said.

“You’re gonna fire her, but not me.”

“You’re my son. Why would I fire you? You landed the deal with that client this past week.”

“I could do that because Jordan helped me. She was essential to landing that gig. You’re blaming her, but Mr. Lyons is the problem. Not Jordan.”

“We’ll deal with him when we have to,” Jessica said.

I turned around and left the room for the Human Resources office. I walked in as Alana was wading through files all over her floor.

“Why are you here, Caleb?”

“They fired Jordan.”

She looked up. “Why?”

“They took her phone the other day and found out we were dating.”

She looked around at her filing cabinets. “That shouldn’t have happened. You filled out those forms when you realized she worked here.”

“It’s a setup. The thing with Mr. Lyons pushed their hand. I think they were planning this for a bit.”

She looked down as she stared at her papers. “You’re next though. If Mr. Lyons comes back.”

Fuck.

Chapter 48

Jordan

Stupid Cal.

After I left the office, I cried in my car for a few minutes before driving home. I told him repeatedly that what we were doing was risky. I could have resisted more, but my heart wasn’t into my no’s. Since Brian mailed all that stuff to the office, it looked even more suspicious as a guard watched me pack everything into my car. I had to explain it was something for a friend, which was true in a way.

On the work cell, I had missed calls from Jaime. Oh, yeah. I had another job, but things weren’t official. I’d been so busy sorting all the paperwork with Brian and Cal’s business that I ignored everything else. Now I was having to be HR, assistant, and everything in one. It was too much. Could I still work for them in the end knowing that I wanted Cal? I don’t think I have the heart for this.

The phone rang and I answered it, “Hello?”

“Are we still meeting to discuss the job?” It was James or Jaime. I needed to save her number into my phone. And figure out what to call her.

“You want to bitch about men over ice cream?”

Silence. “Okay. I’m game.”

“I’ll go to the store. I got all your stuff today, anyway.”
