Alana scrambled behind me. “Are you going to win Jordan back? You’re going to go get her, right? She’s at a job interview right now!”

I stopped and turned. “What? She didn’t even give me a few days to make things right!”

“She was fired, and you were pretty waffly till today. What did you want her to do?”

“She was part of my other business. She wasn’t jobless.”

“You haven’t discussed her new pay, insurance, and all that, right?”

“She kicked me out the other night. She gave me an ultimatum.”

“You took too long. Also, heartache is complicated. Things aren’t that simple sometimes.” Alana sighed.

I rushed to my office and tried to gather all my things. When I pulled open the one drawer, I found all the notes she had left on my coffee. I knew what I had to do. All the nice ones before she knew who I was, the ones where she called me an idiot, and a few of the naughtier ones she had left recently. I saved them all. I put them in an envelope and took all my belongings out of this office building.

As I sat in my car, I texted Brian

Me

Get ready to move.

Chapter 52

Jordan

Istomped up the stairs as I ripped off the stupid suit jacket and threw it on top of the bag of Chinese food that was in my arms. At my door, Cal stood holding a shipping envelope. I glared at him. “What are you doing here?”

“I quit.”

I stopped as I tilted my head. “What does that mean?”

“It means if you want to stay with the company with Brian and I, you have a job.”

I shrugged my shoulders slightly. “Things have to change. I understand my worth. I have more to offer thanjustbeing an assistant. Always have, but no one else saw it.”

“Yeah, I know. I realized that. Brian and I have talked about that.”

“So, what does that mean for us?”

“Can we go inside and talk about this? I really have something to show you.”

I rolled my eyes as I sucked in a breath. “Fine.” I pushed myself past him as I shoved the keys into the deadbolt.

“So why’d you finally get your head out of your ass?” I asked as I threw my bag down on the couch. I made my way to the kitchen counter and started ripping open my packages. Cal trudged behind me. I took two plates and divided my meal with Cal. I slid it toward him.

“You were right,” he whispered.

“Right about what?”

Cal groaned as he leaned against the kitchen counter. “I guess everything. Even before you knew where I worked, you weren’t the biggest fan of where I was going career-wise.”

“Go on.”

“He wouldn’t believe me about Mr. Lyons. He won’t fire him.”

My fingers pulled up the latest call to boycott any company that dealt with that office on my phone. “It’s going to get worse if they don’t. They might replace your dad.”

“Not my problem anymore.”
