As we assessed the damage caused by the explosion, the sound of gunfire rang out from within the cabin. Panic surged through me as I wondered if the viper was using his gun on Sofia.

“Fall back!” I shouted. “I won’t go in there. I just don’t want her to get hurt.”

I hoped I said it loud enough for him to hear, but I couldn’t be sure.

My teammates and I quickly retreated to a safe distance, taking cover behind nearby trees and boulders. I didn’t even exchange glances with them. I thought a shrill scream pierced the air, but I soon realized it wasn’t a scream--it was the muted start of an explosion, muffled by the dense foliage that surrounded us.

My heart dropped as I realized what was happening. Taking cover was pointless. Despite the distance, I could almost taste the violence of the blast. No wonder his men had retreated. No wonder he had gone in the cabin.

If we got out of this alive, it would be a fucking miracle.

The ground shook beneath us, and a plume of smoke and dust billowed into the sky. The cabin groaned, and I could feel the very air around me shudder with the impact. For a moment, I was frozen in place, horrified at the thought of what might be happening inside.

My heart slammed painfully against my ribs, only vaguely aware that the impact of the explosion had flung me forward. I blinked, feeling disoriented, trying to clear my vision.

The ringing in my ear got louder.

Higher-pitched.

A dazzling flash of light in front of my swimming vision.

I called out to Sofia, but there was no answer. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t do anything.

There was no pain, just the certainty that I was stuck as my vision dimmed.

I tried to get on my knees to crawl, but my body was too heavy, everything hurt too much. I looked at the cabin, which got smaller and smaller in my pinhole vision. “Don’t worry, Sof,” I said. Or at least I thought I said. “I’m going to get you back.”

And then I couldn’t see anything.
