But still. She was nearly twenty-five, not bad looking as far as she understood. But if one was to believe Blake, shewasbeautiful. And yet no man had swept her off her feet.

More to the point, the man she had loved had left her. If Cain didn’t want her, then perhaps no one would. They had been so perfect together.

“Love can come later. I wouldn’t be the first woman to marry twice and find real love later in life,” Bella muttered. “Anyway, let's carry on.”

Now it was Friday night, and she was waiting for Blake to pick her up and take her to his mother’s house for dinner.

To say she was nervous was an understatement.

Every night he’d asked to see her, and she’d refused. Between spending hours each day at the lawyers' and having lunch with her family, it had been a long week.

Unlike Blake, she wasn’t ready to announce their engagement to her family. After all, he hadn’t asked her to marry him yet.

Also known as signing the contract.

He was so sure that he would.

But she had planted a seed with the men in her family. They’d met at their favorite restaurant in downtown Philly. Bella had waited for their wine to be poured, then made her announcement.

“I’ve met someone,” she said as everyone’s glasses froze on their lips.

Knox glared at her.

“A man. Obviously,” Bella said, taking a big gulp and spilling some of it down her blouse.

“That’s good,” Ward said, glancing at Knox then Atlas.

“Who?” Levi asked. “Do we know him?”

“Blake Dufort,” Knox answered on her behalf, still scowling.

She almost threw her bread roll at him.

“What?” Ward asked, his voice was hard.

All of them turned to him, frowning.

He didn’t look happy.

“I’ve been seeing him for a while. We...I’m moving in with him this weekend,” she said, wondering why Ward would have an issue with such a successful family like the Dufort’s.

“The fuck you are.” Knox lowered his glass with a loud thump, the wine sloshing over the side. “Goddamn it.”

“What am I missing?” Levi asked, ripping his bread roll open and buttering it. His eyes darted around the table.

“They’re pretty good guys, I heard,” Atlas said. “But that’s moving a bit fast.”

You have no idea.

“To be clear, I’m not asking permission. I’m telling you,” Bella said, shooting her father another look. Ward was staring at the centerpiece on the table and seemed to be in another world. “Dad?”

Ward glanced up. “Atlas is right. It’s very quick. You should take some time. Date.”

“When you know, you know.” She shrugged.

“Waiting to know for sure is alsoknowing,” Ward rebutted.

Not in this case.
