Fists pounded the table a second time.

“This is war,” Crow snarled. “We’re defending The Roost with our lives. Every one of you needs to be ready. When Undertaker comes, he’ll bring his pack.”

“We can take them.”

“The crows won’t back down either.”

“Justice for Rook.”

I listened to my brothers but watched Crow. He seemed on edge. He wasn’t saying everything. There was something else on his mind.

“Church is dismissed.”

The room cleared except for Crow, Raven, and me. I sat forward, bracing my elbows on the table. “What aren’t you saying?”

“That easy to notice, huh?”

“To those of us who know you best, yeah,” I answered.

“I’m worried about Gail.”

That got my attention. “What do you mean?”

“She’s manifesting some weird abilities. Things none of us have ever seen or heard about. She knew where to find the letters Rook had left us. The deed was with it. She went to the basement and found their hiding spot behind a hidden panel in a fucking linen closet.”

“Wow.”

“And when you were gone, Talon, she saw your crows. She connected to them. Gail knew you were hurt before any of us fucking knew you’d gone missing.”

Holy shit.

“She’s special,” Raven agreed.

“And that means she’ll intrigue Undertaker. He’ll sense her abilities with that vargulf thing inside him. She’s not safe here.” He scrubbed a hand down his face. “She’s not fucking safe anywhere.”

“I’ll protect her. I already swore that oath to you, pres. I love Gail. I’ll defend her to the death.”

“That’s what worries me,” he admitted.

“You think I’ll fail?” Fuck. That sucked.

“No. But Undertaker isn’t a normal wolf. He’s a vargulf. Twice the size, cunning, strength, and rage. It’ll take more than one of us to keep her safe from him.”

“So what do we do?” I asked, rubbing at my chest and the sudden ache.

“We plan. And when the timing is right, we take her where he can’t find her.”

“And where the fuck is that?”

“I don’t know yet, but I’ll research everything I can until I do.”

Carrion walked into the room and pulled out a chair. “It won’t work.”

Crow sighed. “What part?

“Fooling the vargulf. He can’t be tricked.”

“Okay,” Crow replied, thinking it over. “What if we don’t try to fool him? What if we keep her in plain sight?”
