Carrion smiled. “There you go.”

Plain sight. What the fuck did that mean?

Carrion turned to me. “You’ll need to trust me again.”

I nodded, knowing there wasn’t much choice. “What do I need to do?”

“Stay out of it.”

“You’re asking me not to step in and protect my woman?”

“Her life depends on it.”

Fuck! “Carrion. You can’t ask that of me.”

“I have to,” he replied sadly. “If you don’t listen to me, she won’t make it.”

He whipped his head toward Crow. “That goes for you too, pres. This is war. We’re going to lose people. It can’t be helped. But it’s the specific people we’ll lose that can be altered.”

“Fuck.”

“And that’s a very tiny window open to keep Gail and Bella alive.”

Crow stood on shaky legs. “Are you telling me I could lose my ol’ lady and my sister?”

“Yes.”

“Do what I say when I say so. No hesitation. No argument. Just do it. The clock has already begun to count down.”

In the entire time I had known Crow, I never saw him cry, even when he found out about Rook’s murder. As I looked into his eyes, I saw fear, sorrow, and a fury that nearly stole the breath from my lungs. He didn’t appear weak because of it. It showed humanity, love, and a fierce commitment to protect the ones he loved at any cost.

“We’ll listen,” I promised.

“Agreed,” Raven added with a cough.

Crow hung his head, his breathing labored. When his chin lifted, I saw the resolution in his eyes. “I’ll be ready.”

Carrion never replied. He left, retreating to the shadows, but I caught the tear on his cheek as his gaze locked on mine.

I would never want the burden of his gift.

Knowing the future was its own torment.

Chapter 16

“Ihave a confession to make,” I murmured along Gail’s neck, peppering kisses on the way to her jaw and pausing as I reached her mouth.

“That sounds incriminating.”

“It is.”

She laughed and swatted at my arm. “Tell me.”

“You know those dates you went on?”

She blinked at me. “You didn’t.”

“I sure the fuck did.”
