“The Alpha of the Whitaker pack somehow found a strange witch to compel his pack members after his carelessness caused the death of their family member.I think this is the most relevant part of Nyra’s story to the pack observer case.According to her psychiatrist, the compulsion affected Nyra and her father negatively, making her father psychopathic and even possibly giving them dissociative identity disorders.”Rebecca reflected thoughtfully.
I looked around the conference table at the faces of the participants of this Supernatural Council Intelligence Department meeting, which was arranged to reflect on everything we’d found out from Nyra so we could determine if it was related to our pack observer case or not.
“But ...are we sure that’s why they had mental issues?They seem to have lived a pretty traumatic life before they got to that pack,” Ken asked.
“Well, according to Nyra’s psychiatrist and her team, Nyra might have had a mild case of Dissociative Identity Disorder after her second pack, but the compulsion seemed to have somehow worsened it.Nyra even said that her father seemed like a different person when he wanted to kill Aurora, so it’s reasonable to conclude that, unlike vampire compulsions, this compulsion is lethal to people’s mental psyche.”Rebecca explained.
“Do you think it’s possible that the pack observers committed suicide due to damage sustained from the compulsion?”Victoria asked.
Rebecca nodded.“That’s exactly what I think.”
“Personally, I think these Alphas got the pack observers to kill themselves when either the effect of the compulsion on them started wearing out or the pack observers’ mental psyche became deeply affected by the compulsion.”Daddy Keane said, leaning forward and pressing his elbows onto the long conference table we were all sitting around.
“I spoke to Brogan and based on what he knows, that kind of compulsion was used only by witches with black magic a long time ago.I don’t quite understand most of it, but he’s going to compile the information and send it over to us as soon as possible.”
I swallowed back the urge to ask him if Nina was also available since he’d spoken to Uncle Brogan and instead focused on studying the solemn faces of everyone in the conference room.
“The problem now is that we have suspicions, but we have no way of confirming them.What if Nyra’s experience with her Alpha has nothing to do with our pack observer case?”I asked, deep in thought about our current dilemma.
“I have a feeling that it does, but if we can’t catch an Alpha red-handed, it would be difficult to prove which Alphas compelled their pack observers and which Alphas didn’t,” Levi said.
“The only way to catch them red-handed is to find a witch affiliated to a particular Alpha, arrest both, and get them to provide news about their networks which would help us find the other witches who have been doing these compulsions and the Alphas involved,” Victoria said.
“This is easier said than done,” Rebecca said.“Does anyone have any idea how we could go about finding solid evidence?”
I had an idea and even though I knew my father might not like it, it seemed like the only option we had at the moment.“How about ...at the Alphas Congress?I’ll be there so I can go sneaking around some suspicious Alphas’ living spaces and—”
Daddy Keane was the one who interrupted me.“Absolutely not.It’s way too dangerous.You could put yourself in danger and if you get caught, you could be killed, abducted, or worse.”
“Then I’ll avoid getting caught.I could—”
Daddy Keane’s face hardened in anger as he glared at me.“Aurora, no.If you get caught, you don’t just stand a chance of getting in trouble, you will also cause trouble for the Supernatural Council.The Supernatural Council would be veritably responsible for doing the one thing we’d already promised pack Alphas we would never do, spying on them.”
I lowered my eyes to the floor, squeezing my knees to help me remain calm in the face of my father’s disapproval.
“The only thing you can do is to keep your ears to the ground at the Congress.Listen to all conversations in the open spaces of the Congress as a nosy pack Alpha’s daughter and stay safe.Understood?”Daddy Keane caught my gaze and curled his lips slightly to show that he wasn’t angry with me.
I smiled, my trembling hand returning to normal as I replied, “Understood, Captain Keane.”
“Good.I heard from Aisling that Alpha Owen is going to be using the Curio Bracelets at the Congress, so we’ll also be monitoring the servers for any dangerous magic use.Unfortunately, the bracelet can only measure magic used by the individual it is bound to, but that’s fine too.Rebecca, appoint someone to keep an eye on the technicians monitoring Mac Tire City’s database.”Daddy Keane instructed.
“Noted,” Rebecca said, bowing her head to write in the notepad she always carried around with her.
Daddy Keane nodded and continued, “Okay, although we don’t have any evidence against these Alphas, I want you all to look through the information we’ve gathered for this case about different Alphas and their pack observers and pick out everything that points toward the use of compulsion on pack observers.We’ll follow this up by asking for these pack observers’ log books from the Pack Observer Department and looking for inconsistencies in their log books before they got to that pack or at the earlier stages of getting to that pack versus the later stages.”
He looked at the notes he’d been making in the meeting and said, “Victoria and Levi, you’re in charge of picking out the trustworthy members of the department that will take part in this activity.Ken, you’re in charge of communicating with the Pack Observer Department.Aurora is going to the Alphas Congress and while Levi can’t go because he’s a vampire, he’s her correspondent for passing news from her to us.Rebecca and I will work on delegating the rest of the tasks to everyone else.I hope we can find the culprits and bring them to justice within a month so our pack observers can feel safe again as they fulfill their duties.”
He closed his file and added, “Blaine, meet with the psychotherapist assigned to Nyra Sameera’s case and get her to provide you with a list of all the Alphas involved in her story.Pick a couple of trustworthy Intelligence Department mid-ranking members and Supernatural Council technicians as your team members.Your team’s task is to find evidence of those Alphas’ wrongdoing.After the Alphas Congress, we’re going to try them and make sure they don’t hurt any more people.If there are no objections, this meeting is dismissed.”
