After he instructed us not to touch his laptop, he kissed me one last time, then headed out.

Bash went with him.

Rafael kissed Tatum deeply, murmuring something in her ear that made her blush. He caught his brothers as they reached the garage door, and they all left together.

I heard the sound of multiple locks clicking before the garage even opened to let them out.

My house was kind of a fortress. That was weird, but also a relief.

“I can’t believe we’re in this mess, and all because I had to sleep with a vampire.” I raked a hand through my curls, then just went ahead and tugged them free of my wrecked bun. The hair tie went around my wrist, and my hair fell around my face.

“It’s not your fault he turned out to be a creep. And besides, would you really change anything if you could? This is your life, now.” Brynn gestured to the house around us. “Gorgeous, loyal mate, immortal life, buckets of money…”

“It was worth it,” Tatum agreed. “And if we’re really playing the blame game, I’m the one who dragged you into all the demon drama in the first place. If I had done anything other than sarcastically agree to be Raf’s mate, we’d be back in our old place, watching a chick flick right now.”

“I’m glad we’re not,” Brynn said with a sigh, leaning her head against the back of the couch. “Even with my obnoxious brother up my ass about everything, I love my apartment. And you’re both a hell of a lot happier than you were back at the old place. Things are better now, despite everything that’s gone wrong.”

She was right.

My body started to feel more and more jittery, the longer I was apart from Zander, but it was survivable.

My best friends and I talked about the many things that had changed, until the guys caught our attention on the TV screen.

I sucked in a breath when I saw the Villin brothers walk into the nightclub together. Zander had my attention; his expression was harder than I’d ever seen it, with no trace of the laid-back, playful man I’d come to… like.

Really like.

Or maybe, love.

The guys headed straight for the hallway I knew led to Charlie’s office. I hadn’t had time to process the man’s death, but I knew there were a lot of vampires who would miss him.

And some who would be glad he was gone, of course.

I wouldn’t mourn his death, but I definitely wouldn’t celebrate it. I’d barely known him, but he had seemed like a good man. It wasn’t his fault his son was so twisted.

Our attention lifted to a camera that showed the hallway, and we watched the guys cross it. A group of vampire guards with guns were chatting halfway down. It took them just a little too long to notice the Villins—Zander and his brothers had already shot the men with some kind of darts.

The entire group collapsed almost in unison.

“They’re unconscious, not dead,” Tatum said quietly. “The guys don’t kill anyone without evidence. It would get them thrown in jail in a heartbeat.”

I didn’t turn to look at her; my eyes were glued to the screen.

“They have evidence that Evan and the people he’s working with killed Charlie and threatened Miles,” Brynn murmured.

We watched the guys move smoothly through two more groups of vampires, joined by half a dozen men and women with guns. I wasn’t sure whether they were humans, demons, or some other kind of supernatural, but it didn’t really matter.

Our collective gazes moved to the camera that pointed at Charlie’s office. Evan had been sitting there the last time I looked.

I froze.

“Shit,” Brynn whispered.

“Where did he go?” Tatum’s voice was wary.

I knew the answer, but couldn’t force myself to say it aloud.

The Villins broke into the office, stopping in the doorway. Bash barked orders at the people with them, and Zander was on his phone in a heartbeat.
