He scoffs. “No thanks to your ass.”

I close my eyes and feel the shame of letting myself get carried away by emotions, and Volchek almost won. “I lost it. He was goading me.”

“You fell for his shit. We blocked his exits, and you ran right in his path. Hot-headed as hell, like we couldn’t have taken all those other pussies out easily, which we did.” He shakes his head and holds onto the doorframe.

“Then what happened to you there?” I ask, pointing to his bandaged waist.

“That was courtesy of your rat problem.”

“Rat problem?”

“As soon as you’re feeling up to it, there’s a nice fat rat in your cellar that needs exterminating.”

“What?”

“I could have just blown his brains out, but I know you wanted that honor. After all you were willing to die just to get at him. I promised I’d save him for you. Consider it a wedding present.”

He winksand then stumbles back out of the room with the help of Ivan and his man.

Alek comes in the room, looking unscathed. “Roman, you gave us a good damn scare.”

“How long have I been out?” I ask.

He pours me a glass of water. “Here. Almost two whole days. Surprisingly we didn’t lose any men. A couple of wounded soldiers, but everyone will make it.”

“What happened with Abram?”

“He never made it out of America. Drago said that Volchek sold him to Popov for some soldiers. Although they’re not pleased to know they ended up dead. It wasn’t supposed to be a war between us.”

“Fuck, are we going to have another problem?”

“Nah, the opposite in fact. They’re hoping to create some truce. They don’t want trouble for any of their family members right now. The men that took that assignment had a choice, and they made it. Still, he wants to talk to you when you’ve recovered.”

“Okay. Good to know. Now, when can I move?” I grumble, wanting to get back to business and start living my life without Volchek in the shadows.

“The doctor will be here in twenty minutes and then you can be evaluated.” I roll my damn eyes and hate that my enemy is tied up in the cellar and there’s nothing I can do about it until I recover.

“Okay. Alek, do me a favor. Since I can’t just dispose of our guest, make him comfortable.” I wink, knowing that Alek will keep him stewing until I’m ready to handle the matter personally.

“Already on it. Gave him the luxury suite with the rustic look.” He grins. Perhaps my long recovery might be worth it after all. Daily torture or the thought of torture will drive him mad.

“Perfect.”

“What about the cleanup?” I don’t want Katya seeing any of the mess or the authorities asking too many questions.

“It’s already done. The team went to work quickly. Get some rest until the doctor comes. You look like shit.”

“You’re lucky I’m stuck in this bed.”

“I know. I’m taking advantage of it. I’ve eaten most of the soup Katya made.”

“What?” I growl.

“I didn’t want it to go bad. It was delicious.” I grab my pillow and toss it toward him and he runs from the room.

Katya’s beautiful giggle from beside me draws my attention back to her. “It’s good to see you two together. He’s a really good friend.”

“He ate my soup. How good of a friend is he?” I say, feeling cheated out of her cooking.
