Page 77 of Finding Us Again

“Enough that I can purchase any of the houses I’ve shown you without sweating about making a house payment,” Jackson said.

He picked up the iPad and opened the screen. I was shocked that this one wasn’t nearly as expensive, but still.

“Jackson, we’re only going to be living in it for half the year, and even then, we will be spending a lot of time on the road. Do you really think we need a house with all those bedrooms?”

“Darlin’, we have a security detail that lives with us,” Jackson explained.

I nodded, but Jackson continued, “Before you say it, even after they’re caught, we will need a detail. Plus, I don’t think Marcie is going anywhere anytime soon, and the same can be said for Hayden and Declan. Plus, Mama’s first grandbabies will be here. Do you really think we won’t have regular company?”

I nodded, “Okay. Show me this house.”

The next day, we sat on the tarmac, waiting for takeoff, and I pulled out my iPad. Usually, the plane was filled with conversation, but it was much emptier than usual. Jackson had sent Celeste and Heidi home to Texas for the holidays, but I didn’t think they’d be coming back. When I asked why, he said that he wanted a team of people who would see us as their boss first and family second.

I was flipping through the photos of the house Jackson liked. I was trying to wrap my head around living in something bigger than some of the venues I’d played in the last two years when my phone buzzed.

MORGAN

Jackson tells me yall are looking for a house.

KATIE

We are, but his idea of a house and mine are completely different.

MORGAN

Hahaha. I understand that. Charlotte has a car that costs over 500k.

KATIE

OMG! That’s insane.

MORGAN

I know, right? It’s a sweet ride but completely ridiculous.

KATIE

How do you deal with the money issue?

MORGAN

Charlotte refused to marry me if I didn’t accept half her fortune.

Most people have a prenup to protect their money. Charlotte had one written to give hers away.

I’m still not comfortable, but I’m getting there. Slowly.

I’ll never be frivolous or buy things without thinking about it for a good long while.

KATIE

I’m not sure I will ever get there.

MORGAN

You will. You love him, and he loves you. At the end of the day, you’ll choose the path of least resistance because you want to build a life with him.

But I get where you’re coming from. We had similar modest upbringings.
