Supernaturals were generally irritating motherfuckers, but I swore there was something in the angels’ and demons’ DNA that made them extra fucking smug.

“I can’t believe it.” Matty was examining his hand, flexing his fingers in awe. “It’s like nothing happened.”

My sunshine was thanking Rami profusely, his chipper spirit returning rapidly. He’d likely suffer with the mental repercussions for a long time. Possibly forever. But with his physical injuries gone, it was like a weight had been lifted from him.

I’d thought that, when Matty was healed, it’d be relief I’d feel. And I did—I wasn’t a monster.

But it wasn’t the dominant emotion driving me right now. No. That was fear. Fear and a crippling sense of loss getting ready to settle over me.

Because now I had to leave. I had no reason to stay.

My shoes were filled with concrete, my arms with lead. Not a single part of my body moved. Like it wouldn’t allow me to do this.

But I had to. I had to.

It was what was best for Matty.

I was trying to find the courage I needed to do this. To break my own heart to protect his. I was selfish enough to not want to.

Then Rami threw me an unexpected lifeline. “Ferry, I need you to come upstairs with me. Dimitri, you too.”

Both of them had matching looks of shock on their faces. “What? Are you mad? We can’t go into Heaven. We’re fallen, remember?”

Rami shrugged one of his massive shoulders. “Doesn’t matter so long as you’re accompanied by an arch.”

“Still going to pass,” Dimitri said, his hands clasping both of his mates’. “Don’t really fancy walking up there and getting hauled over the coals. Metaphorically, of course.”

I hid my smirk behind Matty’s head. Yes, the literal coals were more of a downstairs feature than an upstairs one. I understood Dimitri’s concerns though. I didn’t imagine that his former overseers were too happy about him mating a son of Lucifer.

And Ferry? Well, he’d betrayed them a long time ago. All in the name of love.

Neither of them would be expecting a welcoming committee.

“It’s for Micah,” Rami said heavily. “You know what’s happened. I need you to help me intercede on his behalf.”

I had no idea what he was talking about, too focused on what Matty was going through to care.

Ferry balked, but it was Dimitri who spoke. “Is it…is it that serious?”

“Yes.” Rami cracked his knuckles. “As serious as it can get.”

Matty twisted to look at me as quiet bickering broke out in the room. “Who’s Micah?”

“Micah’s an archangel like Rami,” I told him quietly. “He leads the unit Dimitri was once a part of.”

“What did he do?”

“No idea, but whatever it is, it must be bad. I can’t imagine Rami asking Ferry and Dimitri to risk everything if it wasn’t.”

Matty settled back against me, his wide eyes taking in the arguments that were gradually increasing both in volume and ferocity.

Pointless, really. They’d both end up going. They might be scared about the repercussions for their mates, but they’d end up swooping in to save the day.

It was what they did.

I didn’t bother to point out the obvious, instead breathing Matty’s scent in for a bit longer.

They reached the inevitable conclusion in less than ten minutes. Not only were Ferry and Dimitri going, but Dagon had decided he would join them too. Lucky was to stay with Harlow and Bailey while they were gone.
